Earlier I wrote a question regurading my 5 yr old daughter and her wearing her patch on her eye. She has a sever eye problem. The doctors want us 2 patch her good eye for 6 hrs a day while she wears contacts and glasses. She is fine w/wearing contacts and glasses, but the patch she is not. When I put it on her She cries, and then falls asleep. when she wakes up I put a new patch on and try and start over again. But she just starts crying, and falls asleep again. I've tried buying the design patches, that come in different colors and have different styles, I try letting her pick out her patch each day. I tried buying her regualr patches and letting her color and put stickers on them. I've tried the reward thing I thought 4 sure the reward thing would work. I made a chart and told each day she wore her patch she'd get a $1 (the answers I recieved from the other ? werr good answers, but things I've already tried.) I just don't know how to get her to wear that patch?

I agree.... she's old enough to understand WHY she must wear a patch. When situations like this arise in my house, I just tell them "you don't have to like it, you just have to DO IT". She's 5- she can understand that life doesn't always go her way and sometimes we have to do things we don't like. The sooner she starts wearing the patch as her doctor says, the sooner she won't need it anymore. My grandson wore a patch until about age 3 1/2- he had surgery on both eyes also, and now wears glasses...he's almost 5 now. He's always been really good about it all, thank goodness- but we just explained everything to him as I said above. Good Luck

Did someone make fun of her? or does it just annoy her? If it just annoys her, your going to have find something to keep her mind off of it. Rewarding her for wearing it and telling her how cool they look are just reminding her that it is on. Can you play a game with her while it is on? Is she not able to see. If she is wearing contacts and glasses, she must have a vision problem--I don't know how severe it is. Can she watch tv? maybe you could get her to leave it on while she watched a favorite program. If she can't see while it is on, I can see why it would drive her nuts. Everybody in the house put one on. Make a requirement to do some special family thing. Make matching ones. I really like the pirate ideal. The backyardigans have a pirate themed show. Reinact "Pirates of the Carribean" Once she gets used to it, she will just put it on and forget it, but you have to get her over that hump.

She has to wear it. She's going to be unhappy. Those are 2 different truths. You have to be very firm about the patch. Nothing good happens if she takes it off-NO TV, no toys, no outdoors, no fun. On the other hand, you need to let her know that you love her, understand she is miserable, and that it's OK to be angry and you are willing to listen. Remind her of why she is wearing it. Offer her choices about what it looks like and exactly when she wears it but, bottom line, there are consequences for not cooperating.

Have the doctor explain in terms she will understand that if she doesn't want to have to keep wearing the patches then she should just do it and get it over with,
If she likes pirates......there you go. Let her be a pirate.

you are the parent she is the child. She has to wear it and that is that. Don't take no for an answer. If she screams she will get over it. (or give her a smack if you like to) You have tried the nice approach now it is time for the parent approach. if she tries to take it off then a smack on the hand will fix that. You are the parent. Don't give her a choice. Tell her this is how it is if she ever wants her eys to get better. Stop trying to please her. it is for her own good and that is that. You are the parent not the friend you do not have to be nice all the time

Pretend to be a pirate and have a pirate party where both of you play and dress etc like one. Ask her if she wants to invite one of her friends for a pirate play date . Don,t forget to wear your pirate patch also. Make it fun, without it being forced.
