My daughter is about 5'4 and weighs about 145-150 pounds. She is very self consious about herself. She used to weigh a lot more but did some dieting by herself. This week she has been demonstrating weird behavior. She's been eating a little more than she regularly does. And when she finishes her dinner she feels horrible. She eates about 1200 - 1400 calories. She's also a runner. She runs twice a week usually. I think she's been feeling like this because her cycle is supposed to be starting soon, either today or tomorrow. She feels really disgusted about herself this week. What can I do to help her? She's been on a diet, but is so disappointed of herself because of the 5 pound gain this week. I try to explain to her its bloating and everything will be done with once she ends her month cycle. She gets like this every month, but not as much. I'm sure the 5 pounds is her period. What can I do to help her? How many calories should I advise her to eat?

1200-1400 is good for a girl her age. The food splurging this week is definitely caused by her impending period, and water weight is the same. Tomorrow give her a beverage with a good dose of caffiene in it. That will get rid of the water weight. Start Ibuprofen (2) every 6 hours NOW before her period starts and keep it going until her period is over.

Her weight issue is not as serious as she might believe (I'm assuming this kid is 12-13) because she's entering a period of rapid height growth. She won't gain a pound, but she'll grow several inches and slim down in the process.

Remind her that the only failure is the one that doesn't get up and ride the horse again. Five pounds seems like a lot, but it's not. Just jump back on the diet and see if you can iron it back out. More exercise would be good.

Eat healthily with lots of veggies, lean meat and complex carbs and exercise. They help to increase your metabolism rate and burn body fats.

I am on low carb, low fat, high fibre, high protein and a hour brisk walk 5 times a week, and I have lost 31lbs and gain better health. I am now maintaining my 108lbs for more than a year.

Details such as my experience, meals, recipes, walking as an exercise and to shape the body etc etc, are in my blog.

OMG it's so weird but I went thru that like 10 days ago. Lol Small world

Anyway here my advice... Motivate her in some way. Help her see the brighter side of things.

Get a movie that she loves

Put on a song that gets her going or inspires her

Or just remind her of her goals, and the body she is trying to achieve and tell her that that goal is closer than she thinks and shes so close to achieving it.

FOOD is more powerful than any prescription weight loss pills, because the FOOD that you eat can either make you THIN or FAT. You don't get fat because of a lack of exercising, that's a myth. You get fat because you don't eat the right foods at the right intervals each day.

Also, the pattern that you choose to eat your meals each day is more powerful than any prescription weight loss pills. This is true because your body is like an "engine" and it only needs certain foods at certain intervals each day, and if you don't eat the right foods at the right times then it won't burn those calories -- and you'll wind up storing those calories as fat tissue. (Hint: You need to eat more than 3 times per day to lose weight
