Prison is an institution, usually run by state or federal governments, where people convicted of major crimes serve substantial terms. Jails are local institutions, usually run by a county or sometimes a large city, and most of those in them are awaiting trial after arrest. Jail is also where people generally serve terms of a few days or weeks imposed for minor crimes like driving offenses or petty theft.

Generally Jail is considered a county holding cell whereas prison is where you go if you are sentenced after trial and it is usually only for felony convictions or if you are sentenced to more than 1 year.

Jail is local. You are held in jail pending trial (if you aren't out on bail) or for misdemeanors, which usually have shorter terms lasting a few months. Prisons are state or federal, and you go there for committing a felony. That's where terms are measured in years, not months.

Well they both have bars and guards so you'd think they would be about the same.

Prison usually is for people with sentences over a year. Starting at 2 years and up and are run by the Fed's or the State.

Jails are usually run by the cities or counties for shorter terms of confinement.
