After you type in your text (in Photoshop), select it, then click on either the big square at the bottom left of your tool pallett (or the top square at your top tool pallet, both will work) it will bring up a color wheel when you click on it. Then choose the color you want and it will change your text color.

Most fonts when installed on your system are black. The font color is changed within your application, such as PhotoShop.

If you want to add text to an image in PhotoShop, click the Text Tool, then look at the Options bar across the top of the window. Here you can set the font type, size, etc, plus the color. (a colored square about in the middle of the bar.)

This will bring up the Color picker (others have called it a color wheel). Choose the color you want, click okay.

Then click in your image where you want to place the text. Type your text and it will be the selected color.

This saves you having to select the text. If you want to change part of existing text, then selecting it is needed.

If you type your text, then click the check mark in the Option bar, this will "Commit any current edits" of your text and then any change you make to the font, size, color from the option bar will change all the text on that layer without needing to select it.
