Good question. I would suggest that you actually read what she says. What better way to understand something than to go directly to the horses mouth. Also, we don't follow her more than the teachings of the Bible. If we ever said, Ellen White is a more direct revelation from God, or Ellen White supersedes the Bible, then you would know something is fishy. But, everything she prophesied has come true so far, she never glorified herself, all she ever did is write as she was so inspired. All of her writings were compared against God's Word. One thing she says is very important to remember. I am of course paraphrasing, but she calls her writings a lesser light, pointing to a greater light. That is how we view them. They are never to take the place of Scripture. What truly amazes me is how people could dismiss her writings, as if prophecy was not one of the gifts of the Holy Spirit. She should only be rejected if she fails the test of a true prophet. But she hasn't. There are times when she adds details to the gospels or old testament stories, but they never conflict with what the Bible says. They are a wonderful addition and make them come to life, but doctrinally, you could take them or leave them. I seriously recommend reading some of her writings like the Desire of Ages (the life of Jesus), Patriarchs and Prophets (Old Testament Stories), and Steps to Christ (self-explanatory). I also love Testimonies to the Church-any volume. The Great Controversy is also a great book. All her writings have ever done for me, is draw me closer to Jesus. That was her reason for living and she constantly says that in what she has written. Some good questions to ask Seventh-Day Adventists are: 1.) Would you have volunteered to be the first SDA to tell Ellen White that she was wrong for eating unclean foods? 2.) If a literal interpretation of Peter's vision is false and completely against God's intent, why did God choose Ellen White with an unclean diet to possess the Spirit of Prophecy? 3.) Since Ellen White was repeating what was the vision of an earlier person, how much effort is given to proving that original person was truly a prophet of God? 4.) How could God give a Babylonian the Spirit of Prophecy? 5.) Why would God give the Spirit of Prophecy to someone who didn't keep the Sabbath? 6.) How long after Ellen White became a prophet did it take for her to start keeping the Sabbath? 7.) Did Ellen White continue eating unclean foods after she started teaching the "Health Message?

They call her writings "additional light".
They believe there are two tests for salvation. One, do you believe in Christ. Two, will you keep the Sabbath.
Adventist believe, because Ellen White said so, that the seal of God is Sabbath keeping.
All Adventist doctrines revolve around are connected to Sabbath keeping.
Adventist place more emphasis on EGW than the Bible because this is the only thing that supports their beliefs. If you take Ellen White out of the framework the Adventist beliefs totally and completely fall apart because nothing in Scripture supports them.
They must have Ellen's twist of scripture in order to maintain their faith in being an Adventist.
Jan Paulsen says, "I'd rather be known as an Adventist than a Christian." (Scary)

In brief, she was a woman of remarkable spiritual gifts who lived most of her life during the nineteenth century (1827-1915), yet through her writings she is still making a revolutionary impact on millions of people around the world. During her lifetime she wrote more than 5,000 periodical articles and 40 books; but today, including compilations from her 50,000 pages of manuscript, more than 100 titles are available in English. She is the most translated woman writer in the entire history of literature, and the most translated American author of either gender. Her writings cover a broad range of subjects, including religion, education, social relationships, evangelism, prophecy, publishing, nutrition, and management. Her life-changing masterpiece on successful Christian living, Steps to Christ, has been published in more than 140 languages. Seventh-day Adventists believe that Mrs. White was more than a gifted writer; they believe she was appointed by God as a special messenger to draw the world's attention to the Holy Scriptures and help prepare people for Christ's second advent.
I could go on, but you see the influence this woman had/ has- answer the question?

Probably the same reason the Mormons follow Joseph Smith or the Catholics follow the Pope. It's about the same as any other denomination of Christianity -- someone is there to tell them exactly what Jesus really meant.

i don't know, but you should probably ask again on sunday. there won't be too many seventh day adventists online to explain things to you right now. it's 6:45 pm here in the midwest, and the sabbath starts at sundown. i was going to ask a question about judaism until i realized this.

while i am NOT a fan of Mrs White - i understand their concept. every denomination has a leader or group of people whom they feel are tachers. in the bible it clearly states some will lead/teach and others will serve/follow.

I once read a book of hers. I believe she founded the movement. People tend to follow peoples teachings, because that is easier than studying for themselves. But the Bible tells us to study.
