Their web site (cidinternational.org) claims they are " 'the' certifying body to accredit and certify interior decorators for the first time in history." Is their certification really valuable, or does some other organization offer a more recognized certification?

Yes, currently CID certification is 'the' standard in the field of Interior Decorating. Although you may practice interior decorating without CID certification, the benefits of membership may entice you to join. Decorators with CID certification will be able to join design trade (read: discount) programs at stores such as Pottery Barn, Pier One and Williams-Sonoma.

Currently, CID is the only certification for decorators that allows access to these trade programs.

Bear in mind that interior decoration (which requires no college degree and focuses solely on the 'decoration' of interior spaces) differs greatly from interior design, which deals with space planning, architecture, sustainability and accessibility.

There are 5 major organizations that offer interior design certification. You may also want to check if your State requires licensing.
