There are many things we do not know about the pyramids. Apparently, they were built long before the pharaos ruled the land with a technology we do not know about and for a purpose that is not clear either.

According to the author Z. Sitchin, they housed crystals with many different properties. It is said the Atlanteans also had a technology based on crystals.

Since they have an atronomically correct alignment, it seems obvious to connect them with some sort of estraterrestrial activity.

Egyptian rulers chose this particular shape in order to mimic the Benben, a pyramid shaped stone found in the earliest of temples, which itself is thought to symbolize the primeval mound from which the Egyptians believed life emerged. This also connected the pyramid to Re, the Sun God, as it was he, according to some of the ancient Egypt mythology, who rose from the primeval mound to create life.

My understanding is that the building plan was centred around where the 'door' to the pyrammid was to be situated. i.e, that before the door was sealed shut, the open door would allow a shaft of sunlight at dawn, tp fall on the sarcophagus...and tha all pyramids were built to this plan. Doors were individually sited according to the ground layout available.

Egyptians live in a desert country, full of sand. If you pile up sand it forms into a natural cone, Pyramid was an attempt to make a cone shape on a huge scale.

The pyramid is a stable shape that isn't prone to falling over, so it's easier to build than, say, a skyscraper. It is also visually appealing.
