1. Pour briquettes into the grill and spread out in a single layer. Make sure there's enough, closely together, to cover the entire cooking area.

2. Stack the briquettes into a pyramid shape.

3. Fully saturate with lighter fluid. Don't be stingy with it.

4. Wait a couple of minutes and then light in a few places, especially at the bottom of the pile.

5. Make sure the coals are burning nicely. Blow on them or fan them a bit if need be.

6. Let them burn until they turn white (about 20 minutes usually).

7. Spread the hot coals out in an even layer.

8. Put the cooking grill over them carefully. And give the grill a few minutes to get hot before adding meat.

9. Put well flattened burgers on grill.

10. Resist that urge to push down on the burgers. That will only make them dry.

11. Keep a spray bottle with water handle for fire flare ups.

12. Cook on one side until nicely browned, turn over and cook other side. Just one turn.

11. Use touch or a knife to check for desired doneness.

12. Once you have removed the burgers, you can make the meal even better by lightly toasting the buns over the coals.

13. Enjoy.

Although this probably won't help you if you are grilling right now, the best way to light a charcoal grill is to purchase a charcoal chimney . I think that is what it is called Only about $8 a cylindrical chimney with a handle, where you put newspaper in the bottom then add charcoal. It has a hole in the bottom where you light it so air can get to fire no lighter fluid necessary You should be able to get this at Walmart Meijers etc. works great my son in law went out and bought one after he used it here.
Good grilling

1. Clean the grilling surface with a wire brush
2. Stack the charcoal in a pyramid shape in the grill
3. Evenly soak the charcoal with lighter fluid
4. Set a match to the charcoal
5. Wait until the flames have burned out, then using barbecue tongs spread the charcoal out in an even layer
6. place the grilling rack back on the grill, let it get hot for about 5 minutes.
7. You should now be able to cook your meat.

your best bet would be to buy a charcoal starter; it looks like a tall metal tube with a rack on the bottom. you fill the top of the tube with charcoal, and under the rack theres room for you to put newspaper. assemble the newspaper and charcoal in the starter, and put the starter in your grill, and light the newspaper. close your grill and leave it for a good 10-15 mins, until all of the charcoal is burning (you can pour some lighter fluid on the charcoal, although its not entirely necessary). once its burning, dump the charcoal out of the tube into your grill and youre ready to go (the starter will have a handle on the side to hold it without getting burned)

You can buy match ready charcoal and light it. Make sure there is not a strong breeze so the charcoal lights properly. Light it in several locations. Then wait about 15 minutes until the charcoal is hot and starts to turn gray and you should be good to go. If you are using a smoky joe, once you put your meat on the grill, put the lid on top with vents open on the top and bottom. It works for me and I've been tailgating for over 10 years.

Put charcoal in a pyramid-shaped pile;
Soak charcoal with starter;
Let sit for 20 minutes;
Light;
Wait until all charcoal is grey/flaming-red;
Grill away.
