When you clean the cage put the hamster somewhere safe , and dump the bedding in the garbage . Then wash out the base of the cage , use a little dishwashing or laudry detergent Wash the cage bars , particularly at the base if the need it.

Then rinse off with just water , hot water is good , it will dry faster.

If it still smells , add a little vinegar to the wash water .

Let it air dry if possible , wipe it with a rag if its very wet.
Make sure its dry before adding new bedding .

If it has a tube up to a top chamber then that might be the problem. Most tubes pull apart and then you have to scrub them really good If that's not the problem and you have been then maybe the hamster stinks and there is no real way of giving a hamster a bath.

try to switch to carefresh. and mabye it is not the cage. cause hamsters have some sorta oil in their coat that makes it stink.
Well if you clean the cage once a week you might want to try twice a week or you can buy this spray on shampoo at the petstore but i wouldn't do that even though the pet store does it sometimes!

I know what you mean. I don't think the tray in the cage matters, in that weather it is metal or plastic it is still going to hold some urine smell. You may want to take a little bleach, and wipe it down. Be sure you rinse in well and let it dry completely before putting new bedding in. Also, you probably already know this, but never use cedar chips. They coat the chips with an oil that can be irritating if not deadly to our small critters.

I use vinegar myself. Maybe the hamster is a little stinky?
