Why aren't we considered insane and locked away?

Because transsexualism is NOT a mental illness, although there are a few mental illnesses that mimic the symptoms of transsexualism.
Anyone presenting to a doctor claiming to be transsexual is examined by two psychiatrists to determine that we are NOT mentally ill (although stress-related illnesses, such as depression, are acceptable, since it is well known that transsexualism causes such problems). Before anyone receives ANY treatment for transsexualism more invasive than counselling, these two experts have to agree that we are completely sane.

One of the biggest obstacles to understanding transsexualism is that it is an unimaginable and inconceivable problem to those who do not have it.

The reason YOU think it's crazy is because you don't suffer from it; and therefore can't possibly comprehend how it feels.

Music Lover,
Because at this time the prevailing theory is that gender dysphoriea is not a mantel disorder, but rather a birth defect. Much the same as being born with a bad heart valve.
There is an anatomical difference between a male and a female brain. it's possible to hand a medical student a human brain and ask the student; "Is this brain male or female?" and by checking certain structures IN the brain the student can say that the brain is either male or female. but the student may not be able to say if it's from a man or a woman it MAY be from a gender dysphoric person.
In other words... Transsexuals are exactly what they have been saying for the last 4,000 years... Trapped in the wrong body... It was the rest of the world that JUST DIDN'T GET IT.
Try to imagine what it must feel like to wake up every morning and see the wrong body in the mirror... Or to have everyone use the rong pronouns to speak to you, or about you.
IF you had a child with a bad hart valve would you demand the kid play football?
Then why would you demand a gender dysphoric person be what they have no idea how to be?

When I first saw your question I was going to give a long detailed answer, but I would simply be repeating the exact same information as some of the other Transsexual women here have. You say changing sex is rather crazy. That's interesting considering we do spend a great deal of time with therapist. Sense you asked this question via a computer it might interest you to know that may not have been possible with out the work of a Transsexual. Maybe you should go look at www.lynnconway.com and read her story and what she has contributed. From the answers above, obviously thought out and answered with intelligence that no, we are not crazy. Your question do'es however show a leval of ignorance.

You just think it's crazy because you're too ignorant to understand their thinking. We live in a world where physical anatomy (hidden physical anatomy, at that) determines how people are expected to act, their lifestyle, what they think, etc. There are some people who don't follow this and just naturally live like the opposite gender, so they would be more comfortable and blend in better by becoming that gender. This isn't their choice, it's just how they are. If you have a problem with the fact that not everyone acts the way you think they should, fine, leave them alone, but don't accuse them of insanity.

you're making us think of. i admire you for that (any many different issues) So i began out by utilising looking up the be conscious and it is roots and it is somewhat short historic utilization. In it is unique purpose i do no longer think of that it may be conscious to the transsexual community. in spite of the undeniable fact that, language evolves. that's ever changing, broadening or constricting to fulfill the needs of the society that makes use of it. i could argue here from a in basic terms social attitude: Given the argument, that's customary in this Y!A society, that transsexual each and every person is the gender that they sense somewhat than the single their bodies initiate as, then specific, they are cisgendered. to cite "i don't sense i'm a woman, i'm a woman" and "I even have on no account been a woman, i'm MALE" that we see so often here it may flow to help the argument that the transsexual persons who're born with the illness of having the incorrect well-known and secondary genitalia are cisgendered and continually have been. Now, i could assume that a lot of them could disagree, asserting that using fact they have been born in the incorrect bodies they do no longer qualify as cisgendered. they could be incorrect. Their gender isn't in question, nor might desire to or no longer it is. what's in question is how they choose for to handle their scientific situation. finally it is not proper. we are a society of diverse genders. no be counted if or no longer it is 2, 3, 5 or one hundred, we are all unique beings able to great love or great hatred. What concerns is how we choose for to have interaction with those around us. EDIT: Wow, no longer even spoke back 5 minutes and that i've got already gotten a thumbs down. i ask your self who it is from. No i in my view do no longer using fact I have already got a quite stable thought. considered one of those persons who scream and cry for no longer something better than "to be considered the comparable as a bio-woman" to be "dealt with like quite a few different lady" or some such...yet whilst somebody says they are in basic terms the comparable, has to discover a thank you to attack them. staggering

Because like most types that are considered insane we contribute more than those poor sane types.Take a good look at the things you enjoy in life and imagine most of it gone and living in that world because everybody you thought was insane was institutionalized.Haven't you ever thought outside the box maybe thought of some invention or something should you be committed. The only reason we hurt anybody is societys ignorance.

Well.. with the years and years of therapy I had to go through just so I could be happy...

Pretty much gave me a certificate of good mental health...

AND... most guys do feel a bit attached to the "old fellow" and would cringe at the thought of having it "chopped off".

For the same reason music lovers are not considered insane and locked away.

Because they aren't crazy.

A lot of transsexuals feel like they've been born into the wrong body. It's not a matter of being crazy, it's a matter of feeling. I mean, who can be locked up for feelings?

Besides, if it makes them happy...who are we to judge?
