Oh My Goodness. I am a teacher and you should hear the things we get called with no repercussions! Poodle on a stick? That is not really offensive? unless I am missing something? We call the police the Polis where I come from but it is not meant to be nasty. I have an uncle and a brother in-law in CID so I will ask them what the Poodle thing is about, i so don't get it??? Try being called a F****** B***** by 13 year olds!

For starters, the term "policeman" is kind of outdated and sexist. They now have dames in uniform too, I've heard. These days it's either "police officer", "cop", or the plural "donut squad".

And actually, you're implying two questions:

Is it legal? Absolutely. Freedom of speech and all that stuff.

Can you still get in trouble? Sure. Unless you have plenty of witnesses around, if you wind up with a bully he can just claim you threatened or attacked him and then it's your word against his. Though the average cop will either ignore you and walk away or just laugh and tell you to piss off. The smarter ones might even engage you in a conversation and make you feel all guilty about disliking cops and all.

I'm guessing you're about 11 years old, so I don't think you'll get in any trouble. What's a poodle on a stick?.

You can't actually get in trouble for insulting an officer. You CAN prompt the officer to notice any number of offenses he/she would otherwise ignore. You might be shocked how many obscure laws you are breaking at this very moment.

I guess it would depend on whether the policeman had a sense of humor, was having a good day, and what does that mean anyway?

In my city it's a city ordinance to insult verbally or by making a gesture to a police officer. It's a $150 fine no questions asked, and I guarantee you I'd give you one for that... I could articulate your actions on a ticket easily....

As a Police Officer, I would care less. I would wonder what happened to you to show such disrespect, but that is all. I have been called much worse than that on a daily basis.

Well, it is either illegal (your right to "free speech" doesn't apply if it has to do with cops), or you will be busted for something else. Cops can be vindictive pricks, and they know that local judges/Justices of the Peace/whatever, will go along with them. You would be nailed for some sort of offense, even if the cop was making it up. Those local branches of our justice system will believe a cop over you every time.

Experience is the best teacher.
Please, go out immediately and walk up to the fisrt police officer you can find and say that to him or her.
Then , please, post imformation about your experience as there are often computers and online services in many jails.
