My husband, mother and father all attended school during the 50s and 60s and say that they never saw a Bible in school.
I think it has more to do with parents who are too busy working to be bothered with raising their children. Sorry, but the Bible does not equal morality.

A LOT of things have happened in that time period. Several wars. Increased taxes. Increase in social programs, sometimes for people who don't really need them. Civil rights. So what? Every generation thinks the next is on the road to hell. Personally, I think the reason our society sucks right now is because no one wants to take care of their responsibilities. It's up to the schools, government, and video games to teach our kids right from wrong. People from EVERY background do this - some of them strung out crackheads, others good, churchgoing people. I personally believe that it is the PARENT'S job to teach religious beliefs. Not the schools. Almost any two people have slightly different beliefs, even if they have the same religion. Do you want someone teaching religion to your child if they don't believe what you believe? And what if you're jewish? Or muslim? Or hindu? I doubt you would want your children taught only ONE religion in schools, especially if it didn't match up with your beliefs.

hummmm lets think of what else happened at that time shall we?

the Television as a Babysitter phenominon started.

Women began working and leaving the house durring the day to persue their own careers and dreams leaving children with the express moral guidance of any free teenager on the block. at a luxury rate of .05 cents an hour.

violence started to become a form of entertainment as TV and Radio competed to attract viewers and listeners. and each tried to push the envelope of what was acceptable.

rock and rool music made sex FUN, and not just for the married couple.

sex became a way to sell just about everything on the market, as women's clothing became more revealing, the stigma that sex was evil began to rise. so we sell everything with sex, then tell people that they are bad because they buy it.

durring the early 70's heavy metal music began to push the bounds of what was acceptable to new levels, and then in the early 80's gangsta rap shattered the boundries and began to openly glorify violence and thuggery.

comming into the 90's saw us in another war (desert storm)
and the swift defeat of the Iraqui army was a media frenzy that further glorified violence as a way of solving problems.

through a wave of police burtality and violence as entertainment in the mid to late 90's people simply accepted what we were being shown as something that was fun to watch.

comming into the new century it is hard to find an "R" rated movie anymore because what used to be R is now PG13.
and the parental warning label on a music album is simply a ticket to platinum sales figures.

but we can blame this all on not forcing the bible on elementry school children.

and if the bible would really solve all of these problems, then why are you not teaching it in your own house on a daily basis. and worrying about what your own precious kids are doing, and leave me to raise mine.

That's right, because apparently unless American Christians are bombarded with the word of God for every waking moment of every day they eventually revert into a bunch of violent, immoral thugs with absolutely no self-control. Luckily the atheists, Jews, Buddhists, pagans and other non-Xians-- who don't seem to require such constant re-enforcement--have prevented the country from spiralling down into pure anarchy....

Atheists naturally know how to behave WITHOUT a book telling them how. If Christians need a book, god, or list to teach them right and wrong, and can't manage to teach their own children at home or church, then THEY are the problem, NOT religious neutrality in schools.

The Bible is the most IMMORAL book ever written.

Because the kids of the 60's became parents

Now this is a better debate :-)

America has been sliding further and further into a state of decay for decades and it probably does have something to do with a lack of moral values being taught in schools.

But it's got to be more complicated than a lack of Bibles in schools.

I think when they got rid of the Bibles, they didn't really know what to put in their place. The Bible - as it was taught - laid down strict, clear and simple rules that every child and teenager could understand and was expected to follow.
What they replaced it with seems to have been a mish-mash of social experiments dreamed up by beurocrats.

You mean its odd they took a book that advocated genocide, rape, and slavery out of the schools? NO ONE gets morals from the bible.
If people followed by bible literally everyone who works on the sabbath would be stoned to death. There are plenty of other examples.

I agree wholeheartedly. And to the person who said it's from idiotic religious parents... you are so wrong. It's from children with NO GUIDANCE, no right or wrong, they are not being taught anywhere. Before, at least they had the little bit at school, now they have nothing. Is it true that most people, even non-religious, agree the Bible has a lot of good morals in it? There is nothing wrong with it, correct?

Simply stated, we should read and study the Bible because it is God's word to us. 2 Timothy 3:16 states that the Bible is "God-breathed." In other words, it is God's Word to us. There are so many questions that philosophers and people have asked that God answers for us in Scripture: What is the purpose to life? Where did I come from? Is there life after death? What happens after death? How do I get to heaven? Why is the world full of evil? Why do I struggle to do good? In addition to these "big" questions, it gives a ton of practical advice in areas such as: What do I look for in a mate? How can I have a successful marriage? How can I be a good friend? How can I be a good parent? What is success and how do I achieve it? How can I change? What really matters in life? How can I live so that I do not look back with regret? How can I please God? How can I gain forgiveness? How can I handle the unfair circumstances and bad events of life victoriously?

Hebrews 4:12 says: “For the word of God is living, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” While the Bible was written by more than 40 authors over a period of more than 1500 years, its accuracy and relevance for today remain unchanged. The Bible is the sole objective source of all the revelation God has given us about Himself and His plan for humanity.

The Bible contains a great deal of information about the natural world that has been confirmed by scientific observations and research. Some of these passages include Leviticus 17:11, Ecclesiastes 1:6-7, Job 36:27-29, Psalm 102:25-27 and Colossians 1:16-17. As the Bible’s story of God’s redemptive plan for humanity unfolds, many different characters are vividly described. In doing so, the Bible provides a great deal of information about human behavior and tendencies. Our own day-to-day experience shows us that this information is more accurate and descriptive of the human condition than any psychology textbook. Many historical facts recorded in the Bible have been confirmed by extra-biblical sources. Often, historical research shows a great deal of agreement between biblical accounts and extra-biblical accounts of the same events. In many cases, the Bible has been deemed to be more historically accurate.

However, the Bible is neither a history book, a psychology text, nor a scientific journal. The Bible is the description God gave us about who He is, and what His desires and plans for humanity are. The most significant component of this revelation is the story of our separation from God by sin, and God’s provision for restoration of fellowship through the sacrifice of His Son, Jesus Christ, on the cross. Our need for redemption does not change. Neither does God’s desire to reconcile us to Himself.

Bible contains a great deal of accurate and relevant information. The Bible’s most important message – redemption - is universally and perpetually applicable to humanity. God’s Word will never be outdated, superseded, or improved upon. Cultures change, laws change, generations come and go – but the Word of God is as relevant today as it was when it was first written. Not all of Scripture necessarily applies explicitly to us today, but all Scriptures contain truth that we can, and should, apply to our lives today.
