How do I encourage my friend (a girl) to see a psychiatrist for evaluation? She seems to suffer from depression. Thanks.

Talk to her parents or a school counselor if she is young. Depression in teens is hard to catch, you are in a good position to alert them. Also, suggest she talk to "someone" because she seems unhappy to you, and you are concerned. Heading right to a medical diagnosis is scary, you may want to work up to it.

Tell her a psychiatrist is a medical doctor like any other physician. A psychiatrist, however, specializes in behavioral medicine. Psychiatrist treat depression, mood disorders, anxiety and phobic disorders, and psychotic disorders to name a few.

She needs to realize you don't have to be "crazy" to need medical help for depression. Educate her and maybe she will be more willing to seek treatment.

Try to persuade her in the kindest way possible that you think she is depressed and if she would go and see a doctor and get help and meds, possibly, she would feel so much better. Ask her if she likes the way she's feeling now and if she wants to stay like it or even possibly get worse cause it's unlikely she's gonna get better like magic..........

Tell her that you really care for her, and you want to help. If she's suffering from depression, it means that she feels lonely and left out. Tell her that she's not alone, and that she has you. I guess she would be inspired to save herself from depression now that she knows someone cares for her.

I hope she'll be alright.
