I bought the Sony Dream System last year. I want to buy the Blu-Ray if I can hook it up to the Dream System through an HDMI cable thereby eliminating the need to buy a whole new audio system.

YES! You can.

As was already suggested, hook the video directly from the Blu-Ray player to the TV (either with HDMI or component video cables) then run optical audio from the player to the Dream System's optical input (you can also use the coaxial digital instead, depending on what audio jacks you have available.)

Goodluck and let me know how it goes!

If your Dream System has s/pdif audio input, then connect the video (HDMI) to the TV and the audio out from the blu ray to your system.

Check your manual for the best way to connect an external system.

Sure, for $179 it's worth finding out for yourself. Personally (and I am a big Sony LCD HDTV fan), I would choose a Pioneer Blu-Ray over Sony (unless I was willing to invest into a Sony ES model), and Pioneer Elite is my first choice for best value for high quality and reliability. I have seen a lot of used or defective entry level Sony Blu-Ray players on eBay, so I wonder if their reliability is not the best. I never have been big on Sony electronics outside of their TVs over the years, except for Sony ES gear which I do like if the price is right(ly discounted). Happy shopping!

If your dream system allows for hook up for an external DVD player , I see no reason for you to have to buy a whole new system, and use your dream system.
