an assasination is the murder of someone important, powerful, and in the public eye, like a president, a king, or other type of government official. It is usually planned and executed in great detail.

Murder is killing anyone really, whether it be planned (1st degree, premeditated), or spontaneous but with intention (second degree murder) or without intention (3rd degree or manslaughter) like hitting someone with a car while driving drunk.
