We just had our 2yr.old cat spayed two days ago. We took her to a Valley Cat rescue. Anyways when we went to pick her up the receptionist told us she had an infection and needed antibotics and they were going charge us extra but we didn't have the extra 15 dollars except for antibotics..She didn't mention what kind of infection, and we didn't think to ask since we were occupied we her. Anyways my husband said to call and ask the place cause it didn't make sense she had an infection right after surgery. So we called and she told us she had an infection in her Uterus from being in heat alot b4 being spayed. My question is, Is there such a thing? What causes it? A friend told us that placed like that try to get your money and might try cheat ya outta money and tell ya she has infection. So that just gets us thinking... Just wondering if anyone out there can help us out and tell us if you heard such a thing.I'm just curious..Thankx!!!

Cats can get AN INFECTION CALLED PYOMETRIA you are lucky some cat actually die from it. It is much like a burst apendix in humans and yes going into heat to many times can accually cause it to happen. Good Luck

She had what was called a pyometra. It's very common in cats, and if a cat does have this condition it will require medication to clear up the infection after a spay, however, call the vet back and ask if they can set you up with any cheaper antibiotics,, they most like were going to put her on amoxi drops or clavamox drops. (basically the same thing) They might have a cheaper alternative, like the pill form of the medications. Cats get this because often, once they go into heat, they do not go out of heat until they mate, and if they don't mate then it can cause an infection. I seriously doubt these people were trying to cheat you out of money. Most vets will try to save you money.

Here is some more info about pyometra. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyometra

These places are the kindest and most decent that you could take your pet to; they WONT cheat you. Most people working there dont charge for their time, and believe me hon, if they say your cat has an infection, then she really has. A uterus infection could have been ongoing for some time before your cat got to the clinic- its common in un-neutered females, and can kill them. My daughters cat lost her kittens through an infected uterus, and she had to be put to sleep because of the infection spreading right through her bloodstream. Trust the Clinic; they wont let you down, and are wonderful people.....think how animals would suffer if the Clinic wasnt there!!! A lot of us cant afford heavy vet bills, and pet insurance is just a very expensive con.

A uterus infection is called "pyrometra", and it is VERY SERIOUS. Untreated, it will kill a cat. Sometimes it's caused from the cat being pregnant and her babies dying inside of her....sometimes it's from just not having a chance to be cleaned out between "heats". If the place that spayed her advised antibiotics, BY ALL MEANS get them in her ASAP.

No, no, that's a real ailment. One of the reasons to get cats spayed young is to avoid all the infections, cancers, and other problems associated with the reproductive tract.
Not sure what type it could be, but not important. Just use the antibiotics as long as they told you to- don't stop treating her too soon.
