My cockatiel that I have only had for two months just lost a blood feather. I panicked and took him in and they said he would be fine. Now, twenty minutes later he is still bleeding and it looks like he had a gash under his wing. What should I do? He is not bleeding prefusely, but it does look like it is still bleeding. Help!!

Broken blood feathers do bleed alot and need to be pulled out to stop the bleeding, but by someone that knows how to!

Put some flour or corn starch in a small bowl. Towel the bird ( if you have someont there ask them to help hold the bird securely, BUT correctly in a towel. You take fingers ful of the corn startch or flour and gently Stuff it into the hole when the blood is coming from - work camly so not to stress the bird any more, but work Fast to stop the bleeding.

IF someone is there to go and get the corn startch or flour for you, get a pice of sterial gaze, or a clean white rag and gently put in and hold pressure on the spot the blood is coming from.
Hold it there 3 mintues, then release. IF is still bleeding hold again - Not Too Hard, just enough to stop the bleeding, then put some corn starch on it.

This bird will be stressed, so if bleeding has completely stopped return him tto the cage and watch him closely for 30 mins or so.

IF the bleeding doesn't stop you must get the bird to a vet as fast as you can!

** Try to stay calm so th ebird don't stress more from YOUR emotions. Isn't easy I know, but please try to be calm.

Do not waste more money on the vet.

Use a damp cloth and put pressure on the wound. That the vet did not see the cut is ...........what can I say?

Get some Kwik Stop from a feed store and that will stop the bleeding. I have had parrots for 12 years and never had one lose a blood feather. Is the cage big enough for the bird?

Bring him to a vet again! Preferably an Avian vet, some other ones havn't a clue what they're talking about!
Try putting a little flour on it to stop the bleeding. And buy some powder that stops bleeding for future use. I cant remember the name of it, but they'l know at the vet or pet store.

First of all, you need to pluck out the remains of the blood feather. Use a pair of tweezers. Make sure you get the WHOLE thing, or else he'll keep bleeding. Are you sure the vet is avian certified? If the bleeding does not stop, or you can't get the feather out, take him to an avian certified vet (find one near you here:www.aav.org/vet-lookup) Hope this helps and good luck!!

Oye I hate while that occurs. One time my little cockatiel tore off his finished nail. of course I freaked out. What I did study although replaced into that in case you have a product called quickstop which will properly be bought at maximum puppy shops, it is going to help to clot the blood and end the bleeding. If quickstop isn't attainable, then cornstarch or flour clot the blood somewhat properly. the only element i do unlike approximately those 2 is that those ingredients kinda sting the chicken. Quickstop isn't assume to try this. basically dip the nail or sprinkle any of those aspects then your good to pass. If its somewhat severe run to the vet, yet for bleeding nails and blood feathers you will desire to no longer panic. My little guy replaced into high quality when I dipped his nail in quickstop and created a bandage. Took a pair of weeks for his nail to improve back yet he replaced into high quality. appropriate of success hon!

Put flour on the bleed to help it stop- If it was just ONE blood feather it shouldn't be bad at all. You just have to make it stop with flour and a bit of pressure.

hurry. go to a vet. go ASAP. don't take it to the same vet though if she/he quickly said it would fine. that would mean the vet doesn't care about the bird.
