Actually, some Humans treat each other worse than animals, at least animals don't kill each other due to greed or envy or hate. Animals are more loyal and family oriented than Humans as well. I would not use the animal comparison because it is degrading to them!

Humans have three special adaptations that other animals have too, its just that we're the only one that has the combo!
over-developed frontal cortex - the part of the brain associated with planning & long-term consequences (we rank 3rd in this and overall brain mass behind some whales and dolphins, so we aren't even the smartest)
opposable thumb - ability to skillfully manipulate objects, build complex tools, etc. like our social, tool-building friends in the primate family
advanced vocal system - yah its only as good as a parrot's, but they dont have the thumbs and the brains. most animals have vocal communication with less subtlety
Put the three together, and its significantly unique.
But if dolphins had thumbs? We'd be working for them IMO.

Agreed. It's pretty undeniable. Chimpanzees, our closest surviving cousins, exhibit many of the same social behaviors (both good and bad). Although humans are also *unique* animals that are in many ways unlike other species.

Human beings are animals. We're mammals along with whales, dolphins and chimpanzees. I like the family!

There are more things that distinguish humans from other animals than just upright posture and bipedal locomotion.

Your question implies that being an animal is derogatory or undesirable.
All creatures deserve respect and dignity even if you think yourself somehow better.
I rather like being a clever animal!
It's not like we have some other alternative...

So does that mean you've answered your own question?
Yes, we are a species - Bipedal Primates belonging to the Great Ape Family to be precise (I think it's that anyway)
