I don't know if this more common than people think it is, but I've been wondering if anyone else has the same experiences. A few times over the past few years, I've heard voices in my head. Once, as I was getting ready to leave, a voice in my head once warned me not to go to a place because it was closed down anyway. I ignored this and and went anyway. It was closed, which was weird since it was usually open on those days & hours. And another time I was about to go to sleep, I lied down, and I heard a group of people (a man & two women i think) arguing over something. They were talking so fast that the conversation was over in less than a few seconds but they must have said about 30 sentences in that span of time. Nobody else was home when I heard these things. It's hard to describe but it's like the voices come from inside my head. It's not something I hear with my ears. Am I going crazy or have any of you experienced this? Maybe its more common than I think it is?

BTW these voices don't tell me to kill people or anything like that. And they're never negative or threatening.

Dear kitty,

I am answering this some 16 hours after you posted it. I have had "voices" in my mind that were not my normal little thought voice. They were, at first extremely pleasant, even, exhilarating, and some were so loud they forced me to my knees. They were, most of the time, multiple voices as if people were partying, or in a chorus of voices saying the same thing. They were, to me, unmistakenly "other" A few times there was a lone male voice not loud but commanding. These voices were unwelcome and so upsetting that I reported them and that got me quickly diagnosed as "schizophrenia paranoid".

I have never heard "voices" with my ears that I could not explain. I can not explain the mental voices that I heard. They came on quite suddenly, violently and a few times answered my attempt to talk back to them. I have been on anti-psychotic medication for them since about 1967. I no longer seem to experience voice hallucinations.

Hallucinations are not uncommon. A study in 2000 by MM O'Haymon of 9000 people found near 39% having experienced an hallucination. You can find out a "ton" of information on auditory hallucinations just by typing "auditory hallucinations" into Yahoo! web search. One good link is wikipedia the online encyclopedia. Also there is the phenomenum of Hypnogogic Hallucinations which occur just before falling asleep. They are not uncommon. Just type "hypnogogic Hallucinations" into Yahoo! web search and wikipedia comes up, along with other links, with a summary of this form of hallucination. (I have also experienced "poltergeist type" visual hallucinations.).

Good luck, good health, peace and love!

It may be a form of schizophrenia. I'm not a doctor though, so I could be wrong. If it's bothering you, you should talk to a doctor about it. I think it would be a good idea to talk to a doctor anyway, just for the sake of your future. Going undiagnosed could harm not only yourself, but the people you love. Especially if you have kids. My mom has gone undiagnosed and she gets worse each year. My sisters and I have struggled with our own issues because of it. Me and one of my sisters see a therapist, and we've been going for a year and 1/2, and were still struggling. I wish you all the luck, and best wishes!!

I think psychology is a really interesting topic, and I imagine one of the hardest things to to decide where the border lies between "normal" and "abnormal." We are all a little strange, aren't we? And who decides when exactly a person becomes mentally ill. It could be you have an active imagination, but if they sound really like a speaker is being turned on in your head it may be more than that. I wouldn't be scared if they are not telling you bad things, but it may be something to talk to somebody about.

well I think that generally isn't normal BUT,

Maybe you are often stressed. Brain can act sometimes very weird when stressed out. Or you drink coffee to much etc.

There are many things and factors that could be solution of your problem, but I wouldn't play with it. Search for a professional help, that's the best advice and the only way to find it out for sure

All the best...
