If so how much does it cost? Where can it be done and is there a certain age you have to be? I don't know my real dad and my mom's family is so mixed up we can't do the math to find out what we really are. I just want to know who I am in terms of heritage.

You have to be an adult, or at least, have written consent. All DNA testing will tell you your ethnicity. Probably your parents and other relatives don't really know, unless they have had a DNA test done.
Some of the websites are:
www.familytreedna.com
www.africanancestry.com
You can find lots of them by googling "dna tests".
The cost depends on how far back you want to go. I had my DNA checked by Family Tree. They sent a kit with 2 swabs, which I used to rub the inside of my cheeks, I sent them back and they sent a printed report, plus I can check anytime on the web. In my case, my ancestors came from every continent (except Antarctica!), islands in the Atlantic, Pacific, Mediterranean and Carribean, to include all the British Isles and Iceland. For sure, my parents did not know all this, just the more recent places, like for the last 5 - 10 generations.
It is a good thing to know your ethnicity...
Good luck!

DNA Ancestry is a company which aims to help the clients to discover their roots through genealogical research. This is a great tool for those individuals or groups interested in exploring their ancestry and lineage. By submitting a DNA sample to us, clients can receive an impressive analysis of their geographic origins

I don't believe the technology is to that point yet; it *could* be done but it would probably be quite expensive and take a long time considering the human genome has only recently been mapped.

Usually ancestry investigations depend on mitochondrial DNA, which is passed down from the mother to her offspring virtually unchanged; if enough mDNA samples have been taken of enthnicities around the world, it might be possible to compare a sample against them all to maybe find a person's ethnic makeup.

In time this will probably be a lot easier, but we're not to that point yet I don't believe...

The test you are talking about is called an ancestry dna. It will only give you percentages. Like 30% European, 10% Native American. It will not be specific. They are pretty pricey also.

Put Famiy Tree DNA in your search engine.
It is in HOuston and has the largest data base.

I think it costs about $700-$800 more or less. you can search online, there are several companies. They mail a kit to you and you mail it back to get the results of the test. keep us posted. I'm curious.

I know that it's quite expensive, but I don't have a figure for you.. I don't think you have to be a certain age because, well, your genetic makeup never changes.
