I have a huge room in my house that I am using as a living room and dining room. I want to make some kind of barrier between the two rooms without actually doing any construction on the house... curtains won't cut it. Any other ideas?

Decorative screens. Buy some or make some. You can get ply wood and hinge them together and pain, decoupage or wallpaper the plywood. Or use shelving to creat a divider.

Another option, instead of or in addition to screens, is to provide a visual barrier using furniture such as a china cabinet or bookcase. You might also consider the option of leaving the the areas completely open to each other. It will be obvious from the furniture which area is the living room and which the dining room. Many homes these days have very open floor plans rather than walls and doors to separate living areas.

I recommend a wooden cut out screen, hung by chain from the ceiling (ceiling joist). May need two depending on the size. It will still allow light to pass through and could be painted or stained.

Another variation would be standing cut outs from floor to ceiling but off to the side and not in the center of the room. Hope that makes sense.

Put the couch there and either cabinets or stands on the sides. You'll still be able to see in the dining room but still have privacy.
