A system restore would be advisable and re-install your sound drivers. If that doesn't work carry out a destructive recovery and check the wires at the back of your computer.

If you can locate your motherboard drivers CD, and you have an onboard sound chip, you simply reinstall the sound driver from that. If you have a separate, plug-in sound card, you should have a CD with the driver on that.

If you're not sure what soundcard you have, download a program such as Belarc Advisor (see the link below). Run this programme, and wait for a minute or two. It will give you quite a comprehensive breakdown of the hardware and software in your computer.

Once you've identified the name and model of your soundcard, do a search by typing something along the lines of "AC97 driver download" (without the speech marks) and you'll be given many pages from where to select your download.

Are you sure you have actually physically deleted a file? If so, you might find the file in the recycle bin in which case you could reinstate it. If it is lost completely thougy you would have to reinstall the drivers associated with your sound card. (a system restore to when the sound last worked would be an easy way to do this).

However, one of the easiest things in the world to do is to have your computer volume on mute without realising it.
