For instance NBCHD, ESPNHD, etc. What is the reasoning for these channels having smaller screens?

I have a 42 inch widescreen HDTV.

By smaller screens I mean you see black bars on the sides or the top and bottom of the visible screen. Sometimes the graphic "HD" is displayed on these bars.

Are you sure that you have HD service and are tuning to the HD channels? If that's not the problem, check the display mode that you are using. If people on the screen look tall and skinny, then you're set at 4:3 aspect ratio instead of the 16:9 that HD uses (or you're watching NBA basketball). There should be a setting to let you switch to 16:9.

I think this is a weak area in the HD system. All this aspect ratio setting should be completely automatic, based on some flag in the content.

All of the HDTV Channels I watch, go back and forth between 4 X 3 and 16 X 9, however when the broadcast is in true HD it is always in 16 X 9.

Because they are 16:9 instead 4:3. So they chose to put everything on screen instead of chopping it. It's the difference between widescreen DVD's and fullscreen DVD's

What do you mean by smaller screens...Are they 16:9 or 4:3.
Some movies go even wider than 1.85:1(16:9).

If it's 4:3 then it's probably because they don't want to invest in the software that determines what gets chopped.

I KNOW.....that does suck doesn't it.....

Well, the artsy fartsy art department makes a lot of those decisions on format....

And some station owners make that decision too....

What they are trying to do is, GET your ATTENTION....
and they got it....

Now they could go full screen video but then you don't
BI TCH about it.....and when you bi tch, others listen, and when they tune in the TV station, they might just get another person to buy the sponsor's products....

AND .... they get better Neilson Ratings too.

There's always a reason something sucks.....

The pixels need to be more compressed giving you less of an area to see.
