But I don't get part of it. My understanding is that fraudulent use of a Social Security number is ALREADY a felony (hence Elvira Arellano's felony conviction). So why are they billing that as something that would be a change? Am I wrong? Wasn't it a felony before?

Rabid Frog - that is the number of 'no match' letters the Social Security dept sends to employers each year.
I agree that we have to keep an eye on it. These bills slip more into the boilerplate than is reported.

I saw something on the LA times, but haven't picked up the paper yet. THe headline got me upset though. SOme want to trash the bill because on occasion a few legal citizen who made a mistake might be fired. The last part of your article is also disturbing. SOme of the Senators are worried that illegal immigrants would be banned from citizenship. I like them to explain to me why illegal immigrants deserve a chance towards citizenship.
Also, I thought Identity theft is a felony too.

It is a felony.... "fraudulent use of a Social Security number a felony"????????? If its not yours and your using it its fraudulent use!
Are "Advocates" now saying that an estimated 6 to 7 million illegals may be using fraudulent Social Security numbers? I have to be misreading that... I have never seen "Advocates" admit to that before.
"The new bill does not categorize illegal immigrants as felons, as that House bill did, but it does make fraudulent use of a Social Security number a felony. Advocates fear that the estimated 6 million to 7 million illegal immigrants in the workforce would be barred from any future legalization program"
EDIT:
Wonder how many of those "no match" numbers are habitual? Anyone ever do a study? Doubt it, that would be informative.....

Yes, it is a felony, but I doubt that it is enforced very often. The senate shamnesty bill would have forgiven illegals for that type of crime. I am still not going to forgive Senator Lindsey Grahamnesty for supporting that awful shamnesty bill. This bill won't pass as the Dems owe their La Raza supporters who will violently oppose this bill. Obamarama and Queen Hillary will be outspoken against this bill and will probably call those who support it racists, xenophobes, or bigots.

Speaking of Elvira Arellano, until I hear that she has been yanked out of that Church and deported to the furthest reach of Mexico and barred for life from EVER returning to the USA, I won't believe that our government is serious about enforcement of our current laws.
Another thing, I read yesterday on Yahoo News that McCain has made a complete "about-face" on his illegal immigration stance and it said in the article that it was because he found that his previous stance was causing him problems with fund raising for the election - I trust anyone who makes a total "about-face" like that 0%.

It's always been a felony you're right. They just never pursued it as such before in regards to illegals. Now they're going to.If you notice they mention showing enforcement to get a new comprehensive bill passed easier. We better keep a close eye on this one.

in other words it's only a felony when an American does it, we face jail time while illegals hide out in our churches or is deported. something bad wrong with our system.

I'm sure that it was a felony before, but as long as they plan to enforce it...I don't care.

I guess it's a way to appear as though something is getting done. I'm conservative, and I'm upset at how nothing of substance is getting done (on both sides of the aisle).
