To be perfectly honest, those who are already adherents actively "sell" their "religion" to others (bringing in new "customers", so to speak, gets the current members a commission) and then the new recruits get brainwashed.

See, Scientologists sell it like the greatest advantage to mankind ever, as useful and necessary as oxygen. They draw in interested individuals by offering a free personality test and then prey on the person's insecurities and suggestibilities by looking rather shocked and confessing in an urgent tone that the person is really quite miserable and in dire need of the only real solution - Scientology, of course! They break you down and then promise to build you back up.

From there, it's more and more brainwashing. Here's an explanation from someone who had been in the cult, an explanation of how people can get suckered into an organization which is so obviously a cult:

Here's an article written by a Cult Intervention Specialist describing the mind control techniques used by the Church of Scientology:

Here's a free online book written by a woman named Paulette Cooper detailing the ins and outs of Scientology (first link is pdf format, second link is html format):

If you don't believe then Lord Xenu will get you!

But really, it's not difficult for people to fall into the trap when it is dressed up in the respectability of "science"; Scientology is full of plausible sounding pseudo-science that appeals to people's imaginations and plays on their fears, and people love to buy things; it's all too easy for them to hand over a few hundred dollars and think that somehow they'll get spiritual value for money, like "why think for yourself when you can pay someone else to give you the answers?"

And Scientology makes them feel special.

Their introductory courses are effective and often cheaper. If something is working for you, you may not see the cost above the tuition. Science is delivering more and it's even delivering spirituality now. Things have gotten kind of reversed. Evil is living backwards, so to speak. How did the priests end up in science? I would say the churches have failed. They haven't seen the connections between truth and thinking and religion, which is supposed to be about the truth. Maybe religion is in all of life and we should have been on all the frontiers. Interesting thought.

I know, they believe that a cosmic Jewish zombie, who is his own father, can make you live forever if you symbolically eat his flesh and telepathically tell him that you accept him as your master so he can remove an evil force from your soul that is present in humanity because a rib-woman was convinced, by a talking snake with legs, to eat from a magical tree.... oh wait, wrong story.

Like Solomon wrote...God placed eternity in our hearts.

Most want to believe something. Only problem... most want a message that says you can EARN your way to heaven.

they're not too keen on hearing Jesus say "No one comes to the Father except through me."

His words folks..not mine.

I think they get hypnotized, have you ever tried to read one of their books. Weird, double weird. Several of the movie stars belong to this religion. That right there should tell you something.

cuz they're too busy emulating celebrities who promote it like Tom Cruise or John Travolta.

I wonder if all the stars decided to become baptists or satanists, would their fans do that too?

How can anyone believe they can make money by being a part of the Amway pyramid?

Self-delusion.
