Do not buy an Irish Wolfhound. Check rescue and pounds first. A couple of months ago I bought a Saint Bernard from a breeder and he was a BAD breeder at that. The breeder told me he had to many puppies, he was 10 weeks old and needed shots. Turns out, he was 15 weeks old, didn't have his shots and was lying about his age to compensate for his size. HIS vet looked at him and gave him a clean bill of health. 2 hours later we're home and an hour later we're in our vets office and they are running all sorts of tests because the dog would not stop throwing up. He had Parvo, one of the worst cases of hookworms they have ever seen and an ear infection. $3,000.00 dollars later after the dog was in ICU, nearly died early on, pulled through. I think it was because he had a good home to go to.

Bottom line, you get what you pay for. Going cheep almost insures you're going to get a dog from a backyard breeder or puppy-mill and they will not have the puppy care they need. After this, we will NEVER buy a dog again. We are 100% committed to rescue. We also learned that Large dogs like Wolfhounds and Saints, are often abandoned due to their shear size. You will find a perfectly fine dog at either the pound or rescue and you're saving a life.

I suggest you rescue one. There are plenty of unwanted dogs that will be euthanized if they can't find a home. You'll literally be saving a life. It makes no sense to buy one from a breeder.

If you really want that specific breed, check out this page of irish wolfhound rescues by state:

Good luck!

i'm a big supporter of helping shelter animals, all 3 of my pets were either adopted from shelters or from other people.

Hundreds of animals are euthanized every day because there aren't enough homes for them.

I'm also a big supporter of mixed breeds, i know this is personal prefferance but hear me out.

Mutts/mixes are usually a lot smarter and end with way less health problems. Also with the purebreads you get major extremes, take my dog for instance.

My dog, Ringo, is a mix of hound(possibly greyhoud), collie, doberman and possibly german sheapard.

Houds are very happy-go-lucky and have great personalities but can be very easily distracted and difficult to train. Great dsogs but have their glitches.

German shepards are great with people and very easy to train adn are +++ obedient but can get very aggressive with other dogs. and are very prone to health issues such as hip problems.

Collies, very intelligent, easy to train, but can be extremly hyper, yappy and bossy.

Dobermans are great dogs, very smart and loyal, they will protect their masters from anything but if trained improperly can become vicious and/or agressive.

Ringo has a great happy-go-lucky personality and can be very houndlike at times, but whenever he thinks something is threatening he will switch to serious personality and will stand his ground. He picks up on training and was the top of his class, he was the only not purebread there. He is fantastic with people, especially small children. He is great with other dogs and loves to run around.

Your best bet is to research lots of breeds and pick out your top 10, a great site for this is www.dogbreedinfo.com. Go visit shelters, visit websites such as www.petfinder.com, thats how i found ringo, and find dogs that are mixes of your favourite breeds.

Ringo cos me $300. He was already fixed and had all his shots. He even came with his own leash and collar.

By going to a shelter not only will you help save innocent lives but you will save money and end up with a one of a kind dog.

Good luck!

no offense dude, but in my experience a free dog can sometimes be the worst choice. you have to research a million breeders and make sure they aren't in it for the money and really care about the dog's best interest. after all i've been through with my lab, i would never sell her-not for a million

i admit i love the breed, but they have very short lifespans and tons of health risks. they take in a lot of food and need a lot of love and space. be careful with your final choice and good luck.

BAD idea. Either try IW rescue, or wait til you can really afford one. You NEVER want to go cheap with a giant breed. Cheap=major health issues and vet bills.

Set aside fifty dollars every month for the next year, and you will be able to get one the same way everyone else does... legitimately.

Start a "dog jar" - put money in, and don't take it out. Keep saving money in this way after you get the dog, so you can take it to the vet.
