In order to be considered a "professional", you must earn at least 50% of your disposable income from the sale of your photographs and services provided by the processing of those photographs. Any other classification is pretty subjective. Technically, anyone who calls themselves a photographer has the right to do so, but a professional is someone who makes a living doing it.

The professional does it as a career and makes money, the amateur does it for leisure and fun.

i've done it on occasion with some of my friends who play sports at district parks. i'll go to the manager of the team and ask if they'd like any team photos taken. and if they say yes, then they'll pay me and i can get more photos added to my portfolio. so just ask any of your friend if they would be interested.
