You're going to have to treat the dog, your house, and the yard to effectively to get rid of fleas.
For the dog try Frontline or Advantage. Use this monthly, it will kill fleas on the dog and is a preventative.
For your home ask your vet to recommend some foggers that contain Insect Growth Regulators (IGR's). A product without an IGR will only kill adult fleas leaving the eggs to hatch a couple weeks later. Plan for you and your dog to be out of the house for several hours while the foggers work.
For the yard you also want a spray with IGR in it.
Fleas actually spend most of their time in the environment, while just going to the dog to feed. So you have to treat everything once you've discovered the fleas.

It might have been a flea. Or a tick. Or lice. Lots of things. The best way to get rid of all of them is to put Frontline on your dog. It's a little pricey, but it works really well. At least two days after you give him a bath, put the Frontline on. It will kill the fleas within a day.

Yep - a flea. Any detergent will do. But it will only kill the fleas on them at the moment, not any new ones. Frontline Plus or Advantage monthly is the best way to go for keeping them off.

No! Don't use dish soap, Dawn or otherwise, it's a waste of time!!
Go to the vets for some proper treatment, like Frontline. Seriously, don't waste your time and money on anything from a pet store or so-called 'home remedies' - science has cracked flea control now, so go out and use the proper stuff!!

The best way to get rid of flea's is to have your pet dipped at the vet's office. Dawn or regular shampoo will do nothing! I would suggest calling your local vet's office and asking them. Good Luck

do not use dish soap. its too harsh. the best way is to bath the dog with oatmeal or hypo-allergenic shampoo (found at any pet store). Most dogs are allergic to fleas anyways, and it'll only hurt their skin to bath in dish soap. Bath the dog, then put something like front line on her. You can also use capstar to immediately kill the fleas already alive on your dog. But you still need to use frontline or something like that to keep them off and kill the eggs they've laid.

Buy advantage, frontline, or revolution.
Dawn will kill the live fleas, but will do nothing for the eggs and larvae. They are there, even if you can't see them.
