It's kind of embarrassing, but I have a really bad problem with nail-biting. I can't stop! I've already tried the nailpolish trick; it doesn't work for me. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Coming from a (mostly!) reformed severe nail biter - there is NO magic trick.

It's just a matter of discipline.

What did help me, though, was keeping one set of nail clippers at my desk at work, and one at my desk at home. So no matter what, I'm only a few minutes away from nail clippers.

I still slip up sometimes, but generally speaking, whenever my nails start to bother me, I just reach for the clippers and cut them as low as is comfortable.

I'm really trying to quit, also, and this is the trick I've tried:
Pick one nail. It doesn't matter which one. Just pick one. Your pinkie or thumb is the easiest.
Now put a bandaid on the nail of that finger.
Take that bandaid off in a week and look at how much it's grown. Now "protect" that nail and don't bite it any more.
Continue until you've bandaided and protected all your nails until they're grown out.
The trick to this is, you don't have to stop cold turkey. You can continue to bite any nail that isn't bandaided or protected when you have the urges to bite.

Sit on them.

Seriously, it's just up to your head/mind and practicing what you want... maybe an appt. with a manicurist 1x a week for every 2 weeks will keep you looking forward to something, and not wanting to hear them b*tch about the state of your fintertips?? As a man, I look at this a little differently.

Because I do it, too. You feel them with your other fingers, right? and when one's a little too long (for you) you nibble. It's NOT a matter of nerves or hunger or a bad habit. It's something you've always done for hygiene believe it or not!

The solution isn't tricking yourself. It's carrying a little, cute and working nail clipper around. So, you can do it, without using your teeth - which you've become very, very good at (like me). To tell you the truth - I don't carry a nail file (I'm a guy) and bite my nails, and also tear my toenails a little, before I get around to clipping them. It's a bad habit, but my nails are better looking than 99% of men, and don't have a sissy manicured look, either.

i had this problem too...so one day i bought a bottle of sally hansens maximum growth plus. i wanted to see if it really worked, so i put it on for 5 days like the bottle said. well, i quit biting my nails from day one...i guess since i had something else to do with them (testing sally h's product) i didnt want to bite them. and, i have been a nail biter for 15 years! i have always wanted real nails that could be french tipped, but could never quit biting them....give this a try and i bet it will help. now, my nails are about 1/2 inch long and strong...its been 3 weeks.

Man this brings back memories. I use to have that same problem. I use to bit my nails until they bleed. What I was told to do was either grind up some garlic and then rub garlic on your finger nails and fingers. Or if you are crazy enough use anchovies juice and spread that on your finger and nails. Yes its grouse but you will keep your finger out of your mouth. Natural you don't want to do this when you are going to be around people or in public for the smell. But most people either bit there nails when they are either nervous or just bored. So give it a try and see what happens worked for me.

i checked out books at the library.
i've been dogged by this problem for 35 years. the only thing that worked for me was getting acrylic nails at a nail salon (very short ones). They kind of prevent access. try it. it's about $25 then $15 per month after that. i tried everything and this is the only thing that workd.

Yea, I hate looking at short, bitten nails. Anyways, either put the stuff on your nails that taste bad, or put fake nails on.

Dip your fingers in liquid soap for a while and let it soak in. Should make your nails taste horrible enough to make you not want to bite them.

Wait till you get old enough that your teeth start to fall out. Nail biting damages you teeth, so maybe the wait will not be so long.

Worked for me.

Will power. Learn from my mistakes
