Any Veterinary Professionals out there!! Here is the deal:
2yr old neutered male cat started peeing in 2 certain spots on my carpet a few weeks after I got a new female neutered cat 1yr. I tried everything to get him to stop: Feliway, black pepper, put his food near it, tin foil. So I used this enzyme stuff to take the smell out and injected it into carpet, and then put down tinfoil in case he still smelled it. He peed on the tinfoil. So I have since put him in the basement (it’s like our living room so it’s nice and we’re down there at night with him until we go to bed, he has all his food, litter toys and a feliway plug in, he did not pee down there for weeks but we recently started bringing down the female for about 15 minutes a night, we were always there, this was just to get them used to each other again. This morning he had peed in his cat bed, I mean soaked through to the floor. He is not spraying, he is actually peeing, he still uses his litter box down there this was the first time since he had been in basement that he peed outside box. He is on a antibiotic (for 3 weeks now) currently for a viral upper respiratory inf so if he had a UTI then that would clear it up. What is wrong and how do I get him to stop.

Update: I used natures miracle and a black light and drenched the places where he peed, I let him up from the basement and he continued to pee, so I put him back in bsmnt. He cries while down there, he obviously doesn't understand why he's there but I he doesn't pee down there so that is where I put him. Should I get rid of the female? Will he not mark if the female isn't around?? Or should I give him away? He is my fav of the 2, I love her also but he was my first and we are very close. I have a family member with no pets that will be willing to take her, but will he stop peeing if she is gone?? He never peed until we got her.

I am not a vet but I have had experience when my daughter got a dog. Her cat started showing her Jealousy and/or displeasure by also peeing alot in all the wrong places , even on her and her husbands clothes. Some cats claim their territory and never will allow it to be inhabited by another animal! Bettyk

It seems fairly clear this problem is behavioural. Unfortunately this can be the effect of introducing a new cat. Being neutered doesn't necessarily make a difference, as you've discovered. The ABs for the URI would not necessarily work on a UTI, but I don't think this is a UTI - you'd seem him straining to pee, perhaps passing blood and eventually not peeing at all. UTIs present a little differently in male cats than females.

It does sound like you've worked hard on fixing this. The only extra suggestion I can make is that you get some veterinary Odour Eliminator - this is apparently the best stuff to discourage peeing.

Unfortunately, it does sound like the two cats may need to live separately. Either that, or you can persevere trying to slowly get them used to living together - the male cat is having territory issues, this is how they respond to change. The fact that he stopped peeing when living in the basement shows that he felt secure that that was his own territory and he therefore felt no need to mark it - either that or because he DIDN'T consider the basement his own territory he felt no urge to mark it!

I'm not a vet professional at all, so feel free to ignore me. My best guess is that you cat is feeling very jealous since you've brought a new cat into the household, especially since he started peeing in the basement after you brought the new cat down. From experience, I know envy can make cats behave badly.

I'd definitely talk to your vet to make sure there isn't an underlying medical condition (kidney problems, bad reaction to the antibiotic, etc) & if there is any kind of vet approved behavior modification / pee repellant.

As an aside: while you're breaking him, you might want to put some puppy training pads or human incontinence pads in his favorite areas. My neighbor works in a nursing home & supplies us with gently worn, super-disinfected incontinence pads which are great for protecting areas from cat hair/hairballs/pee & for cleaning up spills.

Make sure that you have at least two litter boxes.

It's possible he's trying to mark his territory to let the female know that that is _his_ house. He might stop after he's had some time to get used to it. Make certain you're not using anything with ammonia to clean up his messes though, as it smells similar to urine to cats and will just encourage him to compete.

You should make sure they check to see if he has any problems with his bladder too.

Sounds to me like you got yourself a jealous cat. He's peeing to establish his territory because he thinks she's his replacement. Try to sit down with them both in your lap and give them mostly equal affection. He needs to learn that she's there to stay. Giving her away will only establish his habit further. Then, in the future, attempts to own any other animals will be catstrophic. (Wonder where we got that word from.) He's just doing what all cat's do when they feel threatened by another. He's clearly marking his territory when she's around. The hard part is getting him used to her.

I'M NOT A VET PROF BY A LONG SHOT, BUT I DO HAVE A LOT OF CATS AND GREW UP WITH THEM. I HAVE MAINLY FEMALES B/C THE MALE THAT WE HAVE WOULD PEE ON THE FLOOR ANYTIME WE BROUGHT IN A NEW MALE. WE DECIDED THIS WAS HIS WAY OF SAYING THIS WAS HIS HOUSE AND DIDN'T APPROVE OF OTHER MALES IN HERE..... THIS HAPPENED 3 DIFFERENT TIMES SO UNFORTUNATELY WE HAD TO FIND NEW HOMES FOR THEM. THIS MAY BE THE CASE WITH YOUR FELLA TO EXCEPT WITH A FEMALE. MAYBE IS JUST ESTABLISHING THE DOMINANT ROLL AND SHOWING WHO RULES THE ROOST? DID YOUR VET HAVE ANY ADVICE ON THE SITCH?

I would take it to the vet to rule out stones, kidney infections or diabetes first. I could be behavioral, coincidental to the new cat or both. But I would want to rule out anything systemic first. My cat has diabetes & my friends cat had stones both exhibited similar behaviors. I cant tell you how bad I felt getting after my girl for wetting, only to find it was b/c she had diabetes & couldn't help it. Stones causes the same thing.

I am not really a vet expert, but my aunt is a vet and i had allot of cats in my life. probably the cat is marking his territory and feels "awkward" around the female cat, if you know what i mean. but im not really sure how to stop it though, maybe you should castrate your cat, perhaps that helps.
