Its normal. Its just callouses from lying on hard surfaces. To keep the area soft and to keep it from cracking and becomming uncomfortable get a jar of Carmax lip balm and heat it for 3-4 seconds in the microwave just until its liwuid and then add 1 capsule of vit E ( opened) to the jar. Apply this to the elbows 2x a day. WORKS GREAT!
This is also good for rough, dry noses! Vet Trick!

Normal, is he on carpet alot? Carpet wears the hair off as bad as concrete. A friend used a horse hoof product to soften his dogs elbows. My dobe, being very shorthaired has worn spots on his elbows and back legs. My Lab being a med short hair only wears off his elbows. You can try a dog bed or Skin So Soft but normal wear is inevitable.

I have a lab and he was crate trained from the time I brought him home. I have noticed that also and its from a lack of movement. Anytime they lay down (especially on hard surfaces) those are the points that they place the most pressure on therefore forming calluses. There are ointments you can put on the areas to sooth the skin but they probably will not go away.

relax, he's fine. it's just like walking on your heels all the time-they get rough and dry, same as a working woman's hands. they get rough from stuff. dogs elbows get rough because when they lay down they put all their weight on that area.
PS for all the people saying its not normal in this breed, or it's cuz he's old-it's normal! the dog doesn't need a vet, it doesn't need ointment-it's NORMAL

Its normal. Most large dogs get those on their elbows from laying down on them all the time. Its nothing to be concerned about. If it looks like he becomes sore, then take him to the vet. But he should be fine!

It's normal. It comes from laying on concrete or rough carpet...anything rough part time or all the time. Doesn't harm the dog.

If he lays on his elbows a lot, then I'd say it's normal. But if he doesn't, then it's not. You can take him to the vet to be sure.

I'm not sure on that breed, but does he lay on the hard floor a lot? Maybe if you got him a pet bed that might help.

No that is not normal you might want a vet to take a look at that and see if there is something they can do to help that.
