In Excel 2003 and earlier, YOU CAN NOT
BUT
In Excel2007, you do have 1 milion columns and 1 milion rows

All versions before Excel2007 are limited to 65536 rows by 256 columns

so in Excel2003 you can not

BUT, if you really need it, you can upgrade to Excel2007, which have 1 Milion columns by 1 Milion rows

You cant have more than 256. The only option you have is to flip the sides (like columns to rows ) if you want all them together.

Otherwise, just break the area in 2 in the same sheet. Anyway you cant see the whole thing no.

Also you can go into another sheet.

You just go to insert, then choose cell (or column). There is no set amount. Excel is endless.
