I have been dating this guy for about 2 months, and he has worked at the same place for 5yrs, and is going no where. I am big on college and getting a really good education to support yourself. Anyways, he wants to be a cop, and has taken the physical test and passed.. now he needs to get into school for the associates in criminal justice. But he has no ambition. He just moved back in with his parents after a recent break-up with his ex. I am trying to get him motivated, and it is like dragging a big piece of lead around... I don't wanna seem too pushy, but I believe he has the potential to be successful... what to do, what to do?

Unfortunately, you can't change someone unless they themselves wants to change. You can always tell him that you think he is great, and that he would make an awesome cop. Ask him what YOU can do to help him achieve that goal.

Do you know anyone who is a cop or into criminal justice? Maybe you can introduce him to your boyfriend. They can talk shop...Your bf may get more motivated if he hears the message of going to school and pursuing goals from someone else.

Remember, not everyone is meant for more schooling. Some people just don't want to go, or don't do well in it.

He is gonna do it when he is ready, you pushing may help or hurt. He may get tired of hearing it from you and tell you to hit the road even though you mean well. Try encouraging him more than pushing him. And if he doesn't really want to do it he isn't going to. Sounds like hes got a lot of things going on in his life right now that he needs to get straight before he adds something else to worry about. The more he has going on in his life the harder school will be..

Since I am not related to you maybe you will listen when I tell you to raise your sights and hunt for a different model? I have six daughters and no matter how many times I suggest that saving the world is not their job description they still go for trying to save the roughest model; except for one, she married a guy who works and goes to school and seems to have no drawbacks. Now HE makes me nervous.
