How can you tell a person is an atheist, without asking, you can't.

So how am I ever going to meet a like minded individual for companionship, comradeship, and plain old lively discussions?

Is there a place where I have a chance to meet such a person?

I am in my 30's, barely. And live in a small city in Northern Ontario, Canada.

Most people here are francophone (french descent) and Roman Catholic.

In fact, I just had to educate an young individual about what christianity is, he thought all churches were catholic! LOL

Just to give you an idea, on the ignorance here. Some people claim atheist, but then once you start speaking, it turns out they are more agnostic and searching. (And they all seem to be searching for a christian godlike figure)...

Hence, my dilemma, too old for university and college groups, but too young for the retirement homes.

I like the idea about the library though! LOL

Just walk around giving the atheist "sign" and see who responds. It's all in your handbook.

I've met a lot of atheists at college, if that helps. Also, it seems that the younger someone is, the higher probability that person is an atheist (at least in my experience).

In general, though, I'm not really sure there's a meeting place for atheists the way religious folks have various houses of worship...

Anyway, you can get companionship, comradeship, and lively discussion from people who aren't atheists, they just might disagree with you on certain points...

Unfortunately, it is rather difficult to simply find atheists in everyday life. Your best bet is probably just to talk to lots of people and somehow pose a few innocent questions that can quickly reveal their beliefs on religion. You know, something like 'My [relative] goes to [such and such a church]...what church do you go to?' Alternatively, there are atheist networks on the Internet that you can go to and maybe find someone who lives near your place. Here are some links you could try:

If you are an atheist, you are probably above average in intelligence. You may be eligible to join Mensa, which is a good place to meet other smart people. When I joined, there was active a Singles Special Interest Group, which is how I met my wife.

Fortunately, they don't walk around wearing a gold chain holding a cross charm with a golden circle around it and a line through it. Atheists don't wear their religion on a chain, or skullcaps or kirpans and turbans or niquabs to show we belong to a "religion club" that tells us what to think and say and eat and wear and read .... and judge.

Take note of the people on here who say they are atheists and choose the ones you find the least cynical about organized religions and perhaps drop a little email to them! Maybe that's a start!

First. Move out of Iran. Get out there and meet a bunch of people. You'll fing someone who's like minded. My gf's probably agnostic but I don't let that get between us. I don't think I could ever date anyone religious though. That wouldn't last especially if we wanted kids.

Are you old enough to be in college yet? Once you get there you'll have an easier time running into atheists, since colleges tend to have more of them. They also tend to have atheist student groups.

You might also see if you can find a local club dedicated to science or philosophy or even atheism itself.

Yep, I just met 22 other Atheists in my hometown. Look online for Atheist Meet-Up Groups in your area. :) Surely, there are other Atheists around, some just don't have the guts to come forward yet.

There are groups in major cities. I think the site is seattleatheists.org around here. You can start a search and see what you find. If you live in the bible belt you will need to use words like free thinker or progressive or brights.

Go to the public library and get a book on cosmology or evolution, sit at a table in the middle of the public reading room, and wait to see who shows up.
