The Sho Me state, Missouri, has lots of people from Katrina who have moved here permanently. Low unemployment rates and lower cost of living here too.

Hopefully no more hurricanes will ever hit N.O. but considering thats not likely........ I moved to SC after Katrina so my advice to you would be to just find a hotel somewhere north and west or way east of La. Get some numbers and find a decent room for cheap. Plan on being there for at least 3 or 4 days. (Hopefully thats it, I was gone for 2 months) The smaller the town you choose the cheaper it should be and the earlier you make a reservation the better.
You could look into getting renters Ins. If you rent, and if its even offered around N.O. right now, Because some policies will pay for your hotel stay in emergencies.
All that is assuming that you dont have any family or friends outside of the N.O. area. If you do then Id say go stay with them, cuz you never know how long you are actually gonna have to stay.
(by the way thumbs down for william k) Us N.O.L.A. people I guess are just too good for Houston anyways, we would never want to be anywhere other then N.O., and the ones that are causing the trouble there well I guess they just fit right in..........I just feel bad for the ones that are good that have to stay there and cant come back to N.O.
And not everyone from N.O. acts like 'those' people that ended up in Houston.

North. My vote (if need be to go this far) is Ohio. I have friends and family there and if I could get my husband to, we'd move in a heartbeat to there. If u end up deciding to leave NOLA (which I totally get and wish I could) Ohio has low ins rates, higher property taxes but u actually GET stuff for it (not crappy roads and crappy parks) and its a nice area. (around columbus area Im referrign to.)
I also love the eastern side of Fl, near Daytona Beach/Ormond Beach.T hey actually get less hurricanes than ppl thing bc of the atlantic ocean. But there is a risk of them. Yet again, its a beautiful state with the same weather as here, nicer ppl, nice area, again they put their taxes to good use. Houses and ins is expensive tho.

Do you not have any out-of-state friends/relatives that would take you in for a few days? But DON'T head to Texas, since Texans have made it clear that they don't want Louisiana people coming to their state. Just head north until you find a hotel with vacancy, and DON'T wait till the last minute to leave!

texas isn't welcome us louisianan's anymore, for reason i rather not get into. i only every evacauated to texas once anyway. i would first see where the sotrm is predicted to hit. the weather hcannel is my source for info, i would head towards GA or as far north as possible. remember to keep bottled water and canned food in your house incase you are not able to leave ane bring some with you when you do for in the car and so you don't have to spend money eating out everyday in case you will be gone for a while (pray not of course) and i learned this from katrina, pack as many clothes as you can in your smallest suitcase to save room.

Atlanta. People are great and welcoming. Job market is excellent and getting better. Plenty of things to do, great places to eat. A lot of churches to chose and become a part of. Weather is great!! Not a bad drive to N.O., if you still have to take care of business there.
