Really it depends on what you like to eat. Personally, I like to keep potatoes, lettuce/salad mix, carrots, olive oil, tortillas, peanut butter, cheese, eggs, milk, juice & boneless, skinless chicken breasts (frozen, of course). Also, in-season fruits and vegetables (farmer's market anyone?). In winter, I like to keep canned vegetables, fruits, soups & canned/powdered milk, plus ingredients for homemade bread.
If you have time, check out different store flyers to get the best price, clip coupons for stuff you actually use & comparison shop like crazy. And this time of year you can easily find fresh/organic fruits & vegetables to stock up on. If you freeze these you can have them later on when they're not in season.

Staple items include salt & pepper along with other seasonings you like, flour, sugar, eggs, milk, bread, peanut butter, jelly or jam, fresh or frozen fruit, fresh and canned or frozen vegetables, coffee, creamer, and meat. That should take care of your basics.

for breakfast it is always good to have these around milk, eggs, bread, butter, veg.oil and cereal .
for lunch you should have cans of soup, cans of fruit, stuff to make sandwiches with.
for dinner you should have meat around like hamburger, chicken, porkchops and fish.
with the meat you are going to want to buy spices.
and to go with meat you are going to want vegatables, mash potatoes, rice.
