My fiance is in the OK National Guard. He is also about to start finaly semester of college (scheduled to graduate in December). I was wondering if there was any way to petition for a deferrment or exemption because he's still in college or for some other reason. We're getting married in a month and they are trying to deploy/mobilize him the week after we get married.

Not trying to get him out of the deployment, it's just important to finish school and he's so close, just was wondering if there was something he could do.

What are his wishes in the matter?

The fact of the matter is that by this time he has either enlisted or re-enlisted in wartime. He knew that he would take his turn in Iraq.

Nope. He's in the military (as much as the National Guard counts as the military), and there is no way to avoid deployment short of an injury that would prevent him from fulfilling his duty on the deployment.

The military is a job. He has to do what his bosses tell him. And if he doesn't...well...a bad discharge from the military follows a person for life and it'll show up on background checks, even if he doesn't list the military in an application.

Maybe he should do the job he signed up for and is being paid to do. Most everyone who is in the military these days is going to be deployed, getting married isnt a reason not to be deployed. Tell him to man up and do what everyone else in the military has to do!

My husband left for a year the day after we were married. Its part of the life!!! He will just have to put off school until he returns.

I think the best authority on this is probably the National Guard. Why don't you call the main office and ask them what their policy is on deferment?

He should have thought about this when he was collecting those paychecks for doing next to nothing! The bill is due-pay it like a man!

no. even college takes a back seat if his unit is called up to deploy.

nope

and you wouldn't like it any better if his unit's deployment was put off until you're five months pregnant, either.

voluntary situations like getting married aren't a hardship.
