And if you don't agree with it (It's not scripture or official doctrine) how can you follow a prophet who makes such serious doctrinal errors?

Brigham Young also credited Joseph Smith with the responsibility of where mankind will reside following the resurrection. In his article entitled "Joseph Smith Among the Prophets" printed in the June 1994 issue of the Ensign magazine, BYU professor Robert L. Millet quoted Brigham Young who, in 1859, stated, "From the day that the priesthood was taken from the earth to the winding up things of all things, every man and woman must have the certificate of Joseph Smith, junior, as a passport to their entrance into the mansion where God and Christ are—I with you and you with me. I cannot go there without his consent." This quote can also be found in the LDS Church manual entitled Search These Commandments (1984, pg. 133) as well as in the Journal of Discourses (7:289).

Any book authored by any General Authority is the responsiblity of that author only. Search these commandments and JD are works are the authors only.
They aren't LDS doctrine.

I don't know if it's doctrine or not, but you need to put this quote in context. Here is what he said before he said this:

>>Joseph Smith holds the keys of this last dispensation, and is now engaged behind the vail in the great work of the last days. I can tell our beloved brother Christians who have slain the Prophets and butchered and otherwise caused the death of thousands of Latter-day Saints, the priests who have thanked God in their prayers and thanksgiving from the pulpit that we have been plundered, driven, and slain, and the deacons under the pulpit, and their brethren and sisters in their closets, who have thanked God, thinking that the Latter-day Saints were wasted away, something that no doubt will mortify them-something that, to say the least, is a matter of deep regret to them-namely, that no man or woman in this dispensation will ever enter into the celestial kingdom of God without the consent of Joseph Smith.<<

So, you see, he was speaking of the people that persecuted them before they came out west. So, whether or not this is the case, I don't know, but this is why he said it.

It is not in error as you implicate. If you understood what we believe, you will understand that, each Prophet that calls in their period has the "keys" to that period.

Just like Abraham, Moses, and etc have authorities and "Keys" to their administrating period..

Joseph Smith was called to serve in this last dispensation, before the second coming of the Lord and the 1st prophet in these last days, so he will be our chief judge for the last dispensation.

Of course Jesus Christ will be the chief judge for the whole mankind, but Joseph Smith will be the chief judge of the Last dispensation.

I answered some of this somewhere else. I'll have to read the rest of the quote but from what you give me here it's looks like he's talking about the fact that all the prophets will stand as judges and or witness against or for us (depending on our choices) and then Jesus will give final judgment

or

B.Y. might be talking about needing the temple ordinances that Joseph restored under the direction of Jesus Christ.

I'll look it up when I can.

Like others said before me, he will be a judge, but also he was a prophet. If people can't accept the Lord's servants, how can they accept the Lord? To inherit all that God has, you have to accept all that God has already given, including his prophets. If a person says, I like everything in the Bible, but the book of James (I've met people that have said that), how can they expect to receive eternal life?

Matt 13:12
For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have more abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that he hath.

If i might desire to easily factor out an errors, Gods isn't meant to be captilized as a result. God is an all useful guy or woman, and Brigham youthful suggested we are to grow to be LIKE Him, no longer starting to be Him, so it remains uncapitalized. The quote reads "The Lord created you and me for the point of changing into gods like Himself." He says this quote using fact there is existence after loss of life, and we will grow to be heavenly beings, provided we made the staggering selections in our Earth existence.

There are many great answers...hope you read them all. My 2 cents is that :

1) Jesus told us that those who reject the prophets, reject Him.
2) If we reject Christ...we are only rejecting the Father ( The one who sent Him)
3) Joseph Smith Jr. was a prophet of God
4) If we reject Joseph Smith Jr. We reject Jesus Christ.
5) If we reject Jesus Christ, we reject the Father.
6) If we reject all this...salvation has no place in us.

living prophets are better than dead prophets. So ask the President of the LDS Church what is true NOW, not 150 years ago. Have a good day!
