You may want to check out this site http://www.terrafugia.com/ this is a group of people from MIT doing just that. I have heard them speak and it is really interesting.

By viable you mean financially? Or are you asking when it will become common place?

For the first one, 2010 is possible if the company is well run and has an excellent product. However I'd expect more like 2020 before the company is in the black.

As for commonplace flying cars.... Never. Too many people can barely drive, never mind fly. Flying will always require too much money and have too many regulations to be accessible to everyone.

Not for awhile.....2010 what the hell? We're just now beginning to produce viable hydrogen/solar powered cars......and those will take another 15-20 years to become mainstream so I don't think we'll have flying cars for atleast another 50 - 75 years.

I could disagree with that last answer because we already have flying cars. We have jet packs too. So its only a matter a time before they figure out a way to make then cheaper and produce them. But you can buy one now, if your rich. But I seriously doubt it will take 50 years before they do it.

Maybe in 50 years.

I doubt 2010 that is only 3 years, if we were that close it would be ALL over the news.

2060 sounds good to me....

Technically - we could have one now.
Practically - NEVER. The average driver is bad enough in two dimensions with the ability to stand still.
In three dimensions, without that option he'd be lethal.
Add weather considerations and your talking carnage.

I hope it's a long time, going by the way most drivers drive. Can you imagine how they'd fly??

Hopefully never...People have a hard enough time driving them let alone letting people fly them.
