hi
Why do lots of non muslims claim that in islam the men beat their wives...??!!
i have recieved lots of messeges about this issue before...and it's NOT true at all..!!
our prophet Mohammad (pbuh) recommend and ordered men in islam to be very kind with their wives and he gave them lots of rights ..
look at the 16th point in the axplanation of this issue
http://www.sunnah.org/msaec/articles/responsibilities_husband.htm
and also our prophet (pbuh) talked about this issue lots and lots of times and he mentioned it in his Last Speach before he died in few days..when he exactly said:
O men, you have some rights over your wives. Your wives also have rights over you. Your right over them is that they should lead chaste lives and not take ways that bring shame to the husband in the sight of the people.

Your duty is to provide them with food and garments and shelter according to your standard. Remember, you should always treat your wives well. God has charged you with the duty of taking good care of them. Woman is weak and cannot protect her own rights. God has appointed you the trustee of those rights.

Maybe here in the USA they don't, the women here do have laws that protect them
But in the East{backwoods I'd say} then it is Man's country and they {men} do as they please to their wives and children

Sometimes caused by stereotyping. We see the muslims that do all the killing and the jihad promotion and then people don't know any good ones so they think all are like the ones that are doing all the killing and terroristic things around the world. Even though one claims to be of a certain religion does not mean they practice it in the way it should be practiced. When all you hear of muslims the violent attacks and the proposed attacks they are planning, it is hard to think there are any that are non-violent as you claim to be. Even I have a hard time thinking I could trust a muslim as I have never met one but have tried to get to know some and gotten ignored by them. They don't want to get to know anyone of another race or religion and are not doing the very things they claim to believe is right. I would love to sit down with a muslim to get to know more about what it is all about and why they do certain things as they do. But then I am a minority in that thinking unfortunately. When those that practice and tell the world they are islamic and it says they have to have jihad on the non believers, it makes people afraid of all of them.

let us take into accordance the different times that the world was in . the prophet SAW said this 1400(i think) years ago, when there had been no movements for female rights. hell, even christian women had no right back then, so shut your f*cking mouths.
now i think, some thing should change in accordance to the new laws and etiqquite, I myself cannot imagine a life living with an arranged wife, and having her cook and clean (even if she sucks at it) and make her do all household chores.
if she is good at earning, and im good at household, ill gladly swap. i wont be degraded, the family will be happy and stable, i see no reason why the female cant be the primary breadwinner. Islam teaches equality over all other things, i think we should follow it. what the family wants to do is up to the induvidual family. But some restrictions should be set.
No cheating. go beat each other up if you cheat. but if a woman can beat a man when he cheats, then a man should be allowed to hiot woman as well, because she commited the same crime, and even if she MIGHT be physically weaker, she has no excuse for being mentally weaker.
I think some idiots do beat their wives, sorry to say it (my country) but in pakistan and india. the tribal areas dont accept the new world laws and try to function like 1000 years ago, which doesnt work. there are still rape punishments. I hate the people who are so extremist taht if a woman looks at a man she is punished. desire cannot always be controlled. muslims do, but they beleive they are doing the right thing, or theyre just coks.
but other religions do as well, so dont just attack islam.

Probably because we do see some beating their women and that is ALL that is shown to us. It's a lot like the way some people take Christianity... they see a few nuts on TV protesting, screaming, even to the point that other Christians are wondering if they should change their label (I know a few who have quit calling themselves Christian because of things like this)... and those outside of Christianity see it and think they are ALL like that. Same with Pagans... many Christians will tell you that all Pagans/Wiccans are Devil Worshippers... mainly because the Catholic Church called us that during their many Inquisitions and they believe this propaganda...
It really doesn't matter what your books says (I don't mean this as an insult)... Christians quote the Bible as their source of "righteous" to prove to others how good they are, but most of them don't follow it. Just as I know there are Muslims out there who do not follow the Qur'an (I hope I did that right) but use these books to justify their actions... including beating their own wives (some Christian men do this as well.)

It is clear that Muhammad thought women are imbeciles who cannot take care of themselves and need a man to protect them and maintain them. This is absurd. Today women have demonstrated that they are capable to do anything men do.
The ultimate humiliation comes when he says that if women rebel, then men could admonish them, refuse to sleep with them and beat them. Why a man should have any right to admonish a woman? Who said men are more intelligent than women and know more? What about a man who disobeys his wife? Is there any retribution for him? No! Men can do as they wish. They are the bosses. Then the punishment for ‘disobeying” is verbal, psychological and physical abuse.
Today you are not even allowed to beat an animal. If you do that you’ll have to pay hefty fines.
How is it that Muhammad instructs men to beat their wives? I simply cannot understand why any woman would want to accept this kind of treatment. Islam is an insult to womanhood. It is actually an insult to humanity at large.

They're stupid. Wife beating happens in every culture, religion and race across the globe. Not just amongst Muslims or in Arab culture. Islam does not condone the beating of one's wife and children in any way, shape or form. It is the people who claim to be Muslims who unfortunately carry out such practices as a means of discipline and cultivation of fear in the children and wives so that they can demonstrate their authority. Just because there are certain flawed individuals in the world it doesn't mean there are flaws in the religion. Islam is perfect. Muslims are not.

So you say if a drunken man who lost his job and decides to take his anger out on his wife turns Muslim, he wont beat his wife anymore?
There are bad people in every religion, you can't claim your religion is free of hate...

I never thought or claimed that Muslims beat their wives.
I am sure some do but that can be said about all religions and groups.
Though I will say that those Muslims that require their wives to wear a burka or cover their face in public are engaged in physiological abuse.

The Qur'an clearly states (Q4:34) that men are the managers of the affairs of women and that male believers should beat their rebellious wives when necessary.
Modern Islamic commentators do not question the basic principle of male dominance. Hawwa claims men have superior qualities of intellect and judgement. 'Abduh and Rida mock the manners and customs of Europeans who object to the beating of a wife. What serious objection could there be to a virtuous and pious husband applying physical pressure to a wife who is out of control? And anyway, God has established this principle, so it must be all right.
On the other hand, the Qur'an clearly states that women are of equal worth, they deserve equal opportunities to attain spirituality and should be given equal responsibilities (Surah 33:35). Allah ordained equality, fairness and consideration for women and men are supposed to protedt and maintain their womenfolk, without denying them their rights (Surah 4:34). However, in Surah 2:228 it says "but men are a degree above them".
There will always be SOME men who abuse their wives and twist scripture to their own advantage. Such men are to be despised, denounced and exposed, whether they be Muslim or Christian.
In the Bible, Christian women are admonished to submit to their husbands as to the Lord (Ephesians 5:22). That does not mean he has permission to abuse or beat her. Just a few verses on it says husbands are to love their wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her. It is summed up in verse 33: "However, each one of you also must love his wife as he loves himself, and the wife must respect her husband."
Sound advice - but if a Christian man takes it upon himself to abuse his headship, then the finger of blame must be pointed at the individual. So let's stop making accusations and counter-accusations - we are all of us imperfect and we all sin and fall short of the mark. Much more important to get our relationship right with God - and stop judging others.

Strange, we *know* that women are not weak and in many ways can excel over men in a large variety of sports as well as in business and other endeavors.
So while I'm glad that all of Islam is going to champion women's rights, it's strange that the prophet lied....

Honestly, I mean no offense, but didn't Muhammad also say that a disobedient woman should be beaten so severely that she has to lie on her "couch" to recover?
EDIT: Here it is:
"Men are the managers of the affairs of women for that God has preferred in bounty one of them over another, and for that they have expended of their property. Righteous women are therefore obedient, guarding the secret for God's guarding. And those you fear may be rebellious admonish; banish them to their couches, and beat them. If they then obey you, look not for any way against them; God is All high, All great." (Quran, 4:34)
