Not everybody eats just wonder bread. Some lovely whole wheat breads (especially homemade) have a lot more moisture and density to them and require a lot more heat to toast them.

Ha! You *think* no one would eat toast that's so burned you could start a barbeque with it, but my Dad like's it like that.... and then just to make it stranger, he scrapes OFF the black stuff! I've asked him why not use a lower setting, but he swears (for decades!) that he likes his toast this way....

I don't know. On my toaster, half way to that setting makes toast black, so I have no idea what the highest would do... *Shudders*

because as toasters get older they don't toast as well so you have to adjust the heat setting
