The neutral is also connected to earth so the two are equivalent. You have reached both wires needed for flow.

hi friend, i think u know the fact that earth is considerd as the electron bank.... it has the largest reservoyer of electrons.... so when u connect a phase that is of high potential to one end of the lamp and other to earth, due to potential difference electorns flow form phase wire to ground...hence the light glows. The earth reached electron will be neutralized with the earth or absorbed. Here an imaginary current loop established .

The Earth is a very large sink for charge to flow into.
With a small sink (like a wire that's not connected to anything), a tiny amount of current will flow, but then the electrons will pile up in the unattached wire, and the current will stop.
The Earth is large enough that the electrons don't pile up, so you don't get a backwards EMF (electro-motive force) to oppose the current.

Earth and neutral are in essence the same thing. "Neutral" is usually the return path to the power company from where you got your power, however in the end this is an "earth" ground. "Earth" is just ground that usually is associated with your buildings electrical system. This is the ground usually used to ground the chassis of appliances so that in case of the short circuit there isn't a possibility of someone getting electrocuted.

evaluate a conductor of length L having a PD V then the sphere is E=V/L the electron flow velocity is given as v=sigma.E Sigma=conductivity of the fabric. observe that the electrons do no longer shuttle from one end to a diverse of the conductor.They face scattering from atoms so they actually travels basically an average loose course.This scattering is pondered as Resistance.Electrons do no longer shuttle with the cost of sunshine this is the electrical powered impulse from one electron to a diverse which propagates with the cost of sunshine so it provides the effect the the present is flowing with mild velocity and this is misguided. The neutral should only connect to the ground at the transformer. Some require that they connect together at the switch box.

Simply put;
The generator on a grounded system 'pumps` electrons to & from the ground to the phases.
Any connection to ground completes the circuit.
This does NOT mean that the above is safe or good practice.
