*Is Catholic*
To some extent some evangelicals believe in a purgation. After all CS Lewis taught purgatory and he is often considered a gold standard.
You got the Catholic belief down.
Your question is a bit complex. It is also debatable. The modern Catholic Church has chosen to direct its understanding of what lies beyond the grave to questions other than time.
What is time? How do we understand it? Can we speak of time beyond death?
This is me talking not the Church. This is an open area of study.
Time is not a concept but it is a reality. It is part of the nature of the corporeal world. If we say there is no more time, then we cannot talk about causality. Because we talk about purgatory as a "refining" a "purgation" we are necessarily talking about events and transformations of the soul thus there is causality as the soul progresses from the "not yet" to the "obtainment". So there is time in purgatory even if time is not the same as time on earth (as time on earth is a product of gravitation) as purgatory is comprised of no corporeal thing.
It is also important to note that Catholics believe "in the resurrection of the body" which rejoins us with our corporeal nature, thus bringing gravity back into the picture and thus time, even if these concepts and functionalities are completely different due to the nature of the glorified bodies.
As you can see, we are functioning well outside the bounds of verifiable knowledge.
All I can say with certainty is what St. Paul said...we do not know what it will be like, but we know that we will be like Him.

Actually being a Catholic and a Cathecist, Catholics do not claim there is a time period in Purgatory, it is a place in which the soul is purged of all sin, during which we who are restricted to time and space pray for those in Purgatory. Again it is not a physical realm, it is purely spiritual therefore not limited by our notion of time or space.
It is a Biblical concept of purification as you have well mentioned and therefore we do believe in it, the Protestant brothers and sister, dont believe in it since they believe that they are saved by faith alone, no need to purify. It is a concept that has seperated Christ's Church for a long time and wont be resolved on Yahoo Q&A.
Thanks for the debateable question, and God bless.

I would think any creation is in time. I would think only God can come in and out of it, although that's not sure. If belief is important than what we believe or think about may make time. We want to take time for things we like. Miserable people say they don't like being miserable, but they have to change their mind, then, so they must not know how. It sounds legalistic, I wonder what we can do with this information either way. The only thing I can think is to prove that no one or organization knows it all, only God, so I wish I had more information.
Yes, fire has always symbolized purification. So few can get in the mind of the Hebrews of old to understand their symbolism. Answers to floor one here.

Catholics like myself believe that on all Saints day Nov 1st. that some of the souls in purgatory go to heaven. There is no specified time line. The Catholic Church was started by Jesus himself. The pope afirmed what is the truth: that the protestant's do not have true churches but have a means of salvation as long as they believe that Jesus is their lord and savior and by doing so live a good life. they help those less fortunate then themselves, have morality...etc.

I'm an Evangelical Christian and I think you are very, very wrong. The "refiner's fire" you've referenced is the judgement of the believer by Jesus after the Church is called to Heaven. It does not occur as soon as we are all in Heaven. It's a believers works that are judged, not his or her sins (which were judged at the cross).
1 Cor. 3:9 For we are God’s fellow workers; you are God’s field, you are God’s building. 10 According to the grace of God which was given to me, as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation, and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it. 11 For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. 12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, 13 each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is. 14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.
This passage doesn't state that fire will LITERALLY burn away works done for the wrong reason. It's a metaphore for Jesus' judgement.

I really can't answer for Evangelicals, but I can give Scriptural some references to for this belief...
2Ma 12:45 And because he considered that they who had fallen asleep with godliness, had great grace laid up for them.
2Ma 12:46 It is therefore a holy and wholesome thought to pray for the dead, that they may be loosed from sins.
(Unless you have a KJV-1611 or a DRB Bible or one with the Deuterocanonicals you wont find these in your Bibles)
NOTE: Protestant Reformers and the Jewish faith removed these books from the Bible and Torah, because they were... well just to Catholic and supported the practices and beliefs of Catholics...
Mat 5:25 "Make friends quickly with your opponent at law while you are with him on the way, so that your opponent may not hand you over to the judge, and the judge to the officer, and you be thrown into prison.
Mat 5:26 "Truly I say to you, you will not come out of there until you have paid up the last cent.
(hmmm... you won't be released until you have repaid your debt)
1Co 3:13 each man's work will become evident; for the day will show it because it is to be revealed with fire, and the fire itself will test the quality of each man's work.
1Co 3:14 If any man's work which he has built on it remains, he will receive a reward.
1Co 3:15 If any man's work is burned up, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.
(hmmm... a mans work will be revealed by fire... and that fire will test the quality of that work)
Mat 12:32 "Whoever speaks a word against the Son of Man, it shall be forgiven him; but whoever speaks against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age or in the age to come. (hmmm, the age to come... so some sins can be forgiven later and some sins will never be forgiven)
1Pe 3:18 For Christ also died for sins once for all, the just for the unjust, so that He might bring us to God, having been put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit;
1Pe 3:19 in which also He went and made proclamation to the spirits now in prison,
1Pe 3:20 who once were disobedient, when the patience of God kept waiting in the days of Noah, during the construction of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through the water.
(hmmm... spirits now in prison)
Rev 21:27 and nothing unclean, and no one who practices abomination and lying, shall ever come into it, but only those whose names are written in the Lamb's book of life.
(hmmm... nothing unclean can enter Heaven, that would go to say that when we die we are cleansed of all our sin, but cleansed how, maybe by fire)
(KJVR) To the general assembly and church of the firstborn, which are written in heaven, and to God the Judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect,
(hmmm... spirits of the just men made perfect, if they were in heaven, why did they have to be made perfect)
As far as defining a time spent in Purgatory, only God can tell how long a soul must stay in Purgatory. That is why we pray for the release of the souls in Purgatory.

Purgatory is NOT Scriptural....
When we die, it is instant. There is no "transformation" period in the after life....remember the story of Lazarus the beggar? Or how about the theif on the cross? They were instantly in the Lord's presence.....(Read Hebrews 9:27)
We have been eternally cleansed by Christ's atoning sacrifice.
The price has been paid on the cross already
