I just recently moved and I feel happy but I feel sad. I was living with my parents and I couldnt take it anymore. I am about 5 months pregnant and I have birds( parakeets) and I feel so sad that I cant take them with me. My bf keep telling me that you cant have a newborn with pets. And it really hurt me because I had one of my birds for over 10 years and the other for about 7/8 years- its hard to part with them. I just wonder if it is true that I cant have my birds there with me. I love them to death. And this move is such bitter sweet

You certainly can have pets, even with a newborn.

In fact some studies show children who grow up with pets in the home, have less chance of developing allergies.

The only pet concern is with cats. And with those its a matter of who cleans the litterbox due to toxoplasmosis. While it won't hurt the mother it could affect an unborn child. So if you were to have cats someone else would need to clean the litterbox for you.

Go get your birds.

You can have the birds with you, it just might be challenging. But Parakeets should be fine! They are small and shouldn't be too loud nor too large for having a baby around. Sometimes birds do get jealous though so i would make sure you still give the birds the attention they need so they don't get jealous. That is what happened to my dad's amazon. He now attacks my brother and i because my dad stopped giving him attention. I'm working with him now though and he's doing better. Keep their routines as best as you can, and they will do fine. I don't see the problem with having the birds around. I wouldn't have them while the baby was around though, too many thigns could go wrong. Having them around might make you feel more at home and pets are proven to lessen stress.

The birds will not affect the newborn baby. All you need to do is to make sure their cages are clean and the area round the cage such as floor and walls are clean so if the baby touchs the floor it will not be in bird crap. I know you need to be careful if you have cats but I have never heard about birds being a problem.

I don't know all the details but no is not true. Babies can be around domestic pets most children are born into homes with birds, dogs, cats rabits you name it. Have your birds and to make sure ask the doctor he knows better than your bf. and me.

aww
poor you
T~T
i think your husband is so wrong on this
its ok to have them
i mean,
they didnt do anything to desirve that
but what i would do is give them a chance,
if they cause yoo to become stressed because yoo have to care for a baby and birds you should give them to a trusted friend or family member if possible
but you never know
they might help relieve the stress
AND i know for a fact babys love looking at any kind of creature they see , belive me its true
(but dont let the baby touch them of course)
please try and help your husband reconsider his actions
lossing a pet is bad stress on a pregant woman that loves her pets a dear as you do
because maybe he doesnt like them but yoo do!
but all i can say is,
good luck
and dont be so hard on yourself if you do have to let them go, just try and relax enjoy your new-to-come baby

You can have pets and a newborn. Birds won't hurt anything. I think HE probably doesn't like animals, so this is his excuse.

if you keep the cages clean(wear gloves since you are pregnant, just to be extra careful) there should be no problem. actually kids that are born and raised around pets are less likely to be allergic to animals when they grow up.

your boyfriend is the one who doesn't want the birds. I have friends who have parrots AND have babies....and they all get along just fine.
