The Christian religion has been and is a mighty fact in the world. For good or for ill, it has absorbed for many centuries the best energies of mankind. It has stayed the march of civilization, and made martyrs of some of the noblest men and women of the race: and it is to-day the greatest enemy of knowledge, of freedom, of social and industrial improvement, and of the genuine brotherhood of mankind.

I found this on a website. I'm sorry if this offends anyone.

It was good up until the "enemy of knowledge & freedom" part....

Christ has freed us from the bondage of sin.......and has given us a Godly wisdom.

The Holy Spirit has empowered us to know true right from true wrong...........earthly knowledge will avail us nothing in the heavenly kingdom.

I "starred" this one...
Quite profound, but not entirely correct.
As much bitterness as I have towards very specific denominations in Christianity...
Historically Christianity has had, at times, a positive effect on Society. I don't think we can take one extreme over another, it is about trying to establish an impartial account of historical events.

Well, it certainly is obvious that the author didn't know diddly about the history of Western Civ.
You ever hear of the Dark Ages after the fall of Rome? Who do you think kept western civ. alive during those centuries? It sure wasn't the laity. They were functional illiterates.

What's offensive is this blanket generalization that seems to be so prevalent on this site whenever anyone wants to be negative about anything.

Lemme clue you types in. One size does NOT fit all, even if you're talking about muumuus!

I think that's a truly profound statement. The only change I would make would be to include ALL religion and not single out Christianity.

The Bible is ALL truth so I'd say Christianity can't be an enemy of knowledge.
