yes, you are at high risk, not only because you are pale but because you let yourself burn. The sun is hotter and more powerful now on earth than itever has!! Be careful and use sunscreen, being dark is soo overrated anyways!! I used to be addicted to tanning beds once i read all the risks i quit going! Now i rub jergens natural glow on everyday and i am quite tan, with no damage to my cells!!! Try it

Actually, they claim that getting a burn increases your risk 10 - 20 fold. First, how "pale" are you, "normally"? If you are fair-skinned, you are at a much higher risk than someone who is dark complexioned.
If you really want to be outside, as during vacations, it is much better to expose yourself to the sun before 10 a.m. and after 3 p.m. (Don't forget to factor in the change to daylight savings time.)
Next, when it starts warming up in the spring, expose yourself to the sun a few minutes at a time until you start to tan. As your skin gets darker, you can stay in the sun longer and longer.
Recently on the CBS evening news, they stated that people who exercise and eat a balanced diet are less apts to burn.
Skin cancer can be deadly; just sun slowly until you tan, then you can handle more.
When I was a kid, we were out doors from dawn to sunset; we became quite dark. I have never used SPF; don't intend to start. After all, people worked on farms for thousands of years, from sunup to sundown. But, of course, they were out there in the spring and became acclimated to the conditions.
You can also check on WebMD or similar sites.
One last thing: when (if) you burn, treat the burn promptly and properly to minimize the effects.

I would think so, because you are normally pale the rest of the year and then during the summer you burn, this is not good! Grasshopper!

I agree with Stephanie. It doesn't take much exposure to cause skin damage and put you at risk for skin cancer.
