Because fear, psychologically speaking, is the most reliable tool for controlling others. Look at some examples from the past including the Inquisition, Hitler and even recently the tactics of George W. Bush.

If you want to control the masses all you have to create is a common fear, and then, when people get out of line simply remind them that if they don't do as they are told then their biggest fear will happen.

Its an effective way of making humans as meek as sheep. It spreads mediocrity, squashes rebellion and makes it easy to pull the wool over the populace's eyes.

Religion, is not the fluffy, feel-good, benevolent institution it claims to be. Religion is a tool for the powerful to instill fear into the hearts of all men so that they do not reach their full potential and spend the rest of their miserable lives cowering in fear that somewhere along the line they are going to trip up and do something that goes against their "loving" God's rules.

I saw one answer which correctly stated that "fear" is used in place of the word "respect" There are many such cases of misinterpretations from old texts.

In most of these cases, the scholar was commissioned by the state ( government or ruler of his time) to make these translations. There could often be some margin for interpretation. In such cases, the scholar would bring these ambiguous possibilities for interpretation to a counsel. They would then choose the "official" interpretation based on their political agenda. In light of this, it seems obvious that this use of the word "fear" has two simple causes: One- it is simplistic and easy for illiterate masses to comprehend, and two- the agenda of the state is to subjugate the masses with fear.

Well, if the mainstream religions are to be believed you have a pretty fair chance of roasting in hell for eternity -- complements of God. If that doesn't inspire fear read the Old Testament. God was forever at war with his beloved children -- sending evil serpents as in the Garden of Eden, drowning them as in Noah's flood, blasting them to atoms as in Sodam & Gommorah, confusing them as in the Tower of Babel, sending armies of assasins to slaughter them as in the genocide of Canaan, poisoning and murdering them as in the plagues of Egypt.

Yeah, I'd exect anybody who believes that stuff to fear god.
