Well first off a rifle would be good and I use a 7mm but a 30ot would be great too.

Hi Toby, Depending on what state or area you live in you normally use a rifle for deer hunting BUT some areas require the use of a shotgun. Check with your Fish and Game Department or local gun shop if you're not sure. If you are in an area that requires a shotgun for deer hunting then you will benefit because you also will normally use a shotgun for turkey hunting as well. You'll probably need 2 different barrels but only one receiver. What will it cost ? Again it will depend on where you live, each state sets it's own prices on hunting licenses and tags or stamps. Then add in the cost of the firearm and any necessary accessories, ammunition etc... Sorry that I am unable to give you a specific dollar ammount.

Generally the .243 Winchester is considered the minimum deer caliber. The .25-06 Remington is actually better, as is the .270 Winchester. Check the regulations within your State. Some States have mininum calibers. Other only specify that it must be a centerfire cartridge.

Best.

you dont want to use too much gun and ruin the meat. A 500 S&W is too big I've allways found the 30-30 in a model 94 winchester to be very effective and the 45 long colt is also a good deer round. When in doubt though allways use the 30-06 in a rem 700.

I read an article in Field & Stream or something similar which recommended whatever weapon is popular in you region of the country. In the northeast this is the .30-06 or .308, in the west this might be a .270 or something similar.

The point of the article was that the conventional wisdom of this method of weapon selection was not arbitrarily but instead suited to the hunting methods and terrains that each region provides.

If you're still not sure, ask around. You're poll results will probably yield very similar choices.

The guns you can use are shotguns, rifles, and pistols. The minimum rifle caliber in most states is a .243 and you can use anyting bigger than that. that includes a .270, 30-30, 3087, 30-06, .300. Some states, like Illinois only allow the use of shotguns with slugs. I dont know about shotgun only states using buckshot, but mine its illegal to use buckshot. You can use slugs with a rifled or regualr barrel. For pistols, most make it that you cant use any caliber under the .357 and you cannot use semi-auto guns, just revolvers and single shot pistols.

first by kind im assuming caliber of rifle because depending on your states requirments handguns may not be allowed or only straight walled handgun cartridges with a minimum energy requirement, shotguns with slugs, muzzleloaders inline or flintlock rifle actions in lever, bolt, pump, or semi-auto. rifle caliber usually a 243 and up, for shots 200yds an less a 30.30, or 35 remington, .444 marlin, 45.70 would be good.basically theres no real easy answer, your location, shot distances(woods, fields, etc.) plans on taking anything besides deer with rifle(varmints, blackbear, elk, etc.) would all lend some insight for a better answer

If hand gun hunting is legal in your state i would go witht he S&W magnum 500. U will kill it in one bullet no matter where u hit the deer and prolly kill the tree behind him.

I've been hunting for 20 years and I use a Remington .270.

It is a light fast bullet with plenty of knockdown power.

I recommend it highly.
