Cats give varied signs of happiness, and it differs from cat to cat, but there are a few that are universal. When cats knead their paws (whether on you, a blanket or anything else) this signals contentment (this comes from their kitten days when they used to knead the mother's belly for milk). Purring is usually a sign of happiness, though sometimes cats in distress purr to calm themselves. I've also read that content, happy cats blink their eyes slowly to show their happiness. My cats have done that with me. Signs of affection toward you from the cat also obviously show a happy cat. If you are taking care of your cat, then he or she is probably happy.

There are many many ways that indicate if a cat's content or happy. Here are some:
1) When he greets you his tail is up in the air (sometimes waving)
2)He comes to ask for attention by rubbing your legs.
3) He's purring deeply.
4) If you're petting him while he's sleeping, he'll close his eyes and almost "sighs."
5) He licks you.
6) Paws at you with no claws extended; almost playfully.
7) Stretches luxuriously.
8) Arches his back when he rubs you.
9) Sometimes they blink or wink.
10) "kneading" of the paws on soft blankets or on you.
11) "talks" /trills/chirps affectionately.
12) Get him lots of toys! Cats of very playful and entertaining to watch!

As you've probably seen on answers, there's many unhappy kittys busy using their owners possessions as a litter box. If your kitty isn't... she/he's content. If your kitty comes up to you looking for pets/lovin... she/he loves & trusts you. If your cat is under the bed half the day, it's because it's the only place they can fit in that 12hr nap w/out being bothered. It's not you, cat's are just like that. If your cat doesn't like company & hides. But comes out when you are home, she/he loves & trusts you. Some cat's are just shy.

There's a lot of signs to tell if your cat is happy-- purring, pawing your leg or your lap, spreading their toes apart (kind of like grabbing), closing their eyes when you pet them, if their tail is in the air when they walk (unless it's an outdoor cat, it usually won't because of hunting for prey), licking your hands/face, following you around the house, and talking to you.

I always wondered this too! I buy my kitty TONS of toys. I forget about buying clothes and spend the money on kitty toys. She has balls, mice...almost anything you can think of...kitty condos....little fishing poles...etc. I think she loves the window perch the best. I clean her kitty liter out twice a day, I change her water twice a day and make sure she has dry food at all times. I also give her wet food once or twice a day.....I hope she is happy.
When I leave for work I feel guilty...and hope she is not lonely. I want to get her a kitty cat buddy, but hubby says NO WAY!! Besides now she is 8 months old and may be used to being the only cat, I don't know.
I even got her a kitty DVD to play when I am at work...it has little bugs that crawl on the screen and she has to try and catch.

Your kitty will purr and rub up against you. It will sleep with you too. You can tell. Cats are very cool animals.

if he purrs when you talk, touch or pet him. He's happy. I have three, it take me the better part of each day for "mommy time". Each get attention the way they like it and I get three happy kitties who live together in harmony. But if I miss one day, my Peanut takes it out on Pumpkin and he pee's everywhere! LOL
