Fat loss is a key great abs - cardio 4-6 times a week for average of 45min - cardio is the only fat burning exercise
crunches, sit ups, side bends etc will tone your abs, sit ups will make them bigger but you only have to do them 2-4 times a week - never work on the same muscle group 2 days in a row because muscle grows in between workouts when you rest

Crunches help but they're not enough. Like Martha R said, try doing them on a ball. They're a lot more challenging that way. You also get a greater range of motion than you would doing them on the floor. I also find that Pilate's exercises are really good at strengthening the abdominal area. Cardio is good for total body conditioning and fat burning so don't give that up either.

crunches only target the central abs and not the obliques. Do crunches alternating left elbow to right knee and right elbow to left knee to engage the obliques. For more of a challenge, do crunches over a fitness ball.
